Each year, hundreds of students enhance their educational experience through a variety of Heriot-Watt and externally funded Scholarships, including opportunities funded by the University’s generous Alumni community, based all over the globe.
The University supports scholarship provision with:
£10m to support fees Scholarships (including £3m for rest of UK (RUK) students).
£1.5m to support maintenance (living cost) bursaries for RUK students.
£7.5m to support Scholarships and Bursary payments to home/EU/overseas students.

New scholarships for 2017/18
If you plan to study in Scotland from 2017/18, you may be eligible for one of our 72 new Heriot-Watt scholarships. Successful Scholars will benefit from a fee reduction in one of three categories:
Heriot-Watt Distinction Scholarships – 100% reduction (for overseas applicants only)
Heriot-Watt Excellence Scholarships – 50% reduction (for overseas applicants only)
Heriot-Watt Merit Scholarships – 25% reduction (for overseas applicants), £2,000 reduction (for Home/EU/Rest of UK applicants)
The new Undergraduate scholarships are open to overseas applicants and the newPostgraduate taught scholarships are open to all applicants.

Who is eligible?

Criteria is based on academic merit, but financial need will be taken into consideration for the higher value scholarships.

Music Scholarships
Heriot-Watt University awards many music scholarships each year in the form of free music tuition for talented choral singers and orchestral instrumentalists up to a maximum of £400 per year. These scholarships are generously supported by the Heriot-Watt Alumni fund.
The Archer Music Scholarships offer tuition for one student up to a maximum of £500 per year. The Archer Music Scholarships also offer two places on the HeriotWatt residential music course for students. They are supported by Mrs Lesley Archer in memory of her late husband, Professor John Archer, former Principal of HeriotWattUniversity.
The CAS Music Scholarships offer two places on the Heriot-Watt residential music course for students.

Selection Criteria
The following criteria will be taken into consideration in the award of scholarships:
• Musical ability and potential. Proof of exam results and membership of orchestras or choirs should be provided. ABRSM Grade 8 is the required standard.
• A reference from your last vocal/instrumental teacher.
• Applicants to the Archer and CAS Music Scholarships are also required to provide a personal statement.
Duration
One year, with the probability of an annual extension for the duration of the student’s period of study at the University. All scholars will be assessed on a continuous basis.
Audition
All new applicants will be auditioned during their first semester. The outcome of this audition and the show of commitment to the choir or orchestra during that semester will be taken into account on whether a scholarship will be offered. The offering of new scholarships will take place near the end of semester one.

Commitment
All music scholars including the Archer Music Scholars will be expected to be members of the orchestra or choir, and attend all rehearsals and concerts. Scholarships enrich the musical life of the University. Scholars are making a real commitment to be fully involved in the University’s musical life. Reliable and punctual presence at rehearsals and concerts will be taken for granted from the outset.
All music scholars are expected to set an example to all other music users at HWU in the way you get involved in your music making here. This means performing to the best of your ability; turning up to all rehearsals on time; turning up to your music lessons on time.
