  Visa for International Students

The information on visa application and procedures provided on this page is primarily for international undergraduate students who come to Konkuk University (KU) as exchange or degree-seeking students.

The conditions and procedures for visa application may be different for international students seeking graduate (master’s or doctoral) programs at KU. (International students planning on pursuing a graduate program at KU must consult visa matters with the Graduate School or the administrative office of his/her department.)

Korean law defines a visa as a “consul’s recommendation for a foreigner’s entry request.” Those who fail to meet the necessary requirements may be denied entry into Korea. Not all visitors to Korea will receive the same visa, as one will be issued depending on the particular situation of the individual.

There are two types of visas in terms of entry: a single-entry and a multiple-entry visa. In your passport, a single-entry visa is marked as "S", and a multiple-entry visa as "M". (See "종류/Entries" on your visa.) If you want to travel abroad during your stay in Korea before alien registration, we suggest you get a multiple-entry visa. The embassy or a consulate will issue you a single-entry visa if you do not specifically request otherwise.

  Visa for International Students

To study in Korea for more than 90 days as a degree-seeking student, you should apply for a D-2 student visaat the Korean consulate near your home. A student visa is usually issued within a week.

  Types of D-2 Visa

Level Degree Student Exchange Student
Undergraduate D-2-2 D-2-6
Graduate (Master’s) D-2-3
Graduate (Doctoral) D-2-4

To apply for a D-2 student visa, you must

  submit:

  Application form (available at www.hikorea.go.kr)

  Passport

  One copy of your passport

Certificate of admission (issued and sent by Konkuk)

Documentation proving your financial capability (“Financial Statement”)

  Two passport photos

  Visa processing fee

Note: In some countries including Germany, there is no visa processing fee.

Other documents required by the Korean consulate

If you have a C-3 visa or another type of short-term visa instead of a D-2 visa, you must change your visa as quickly as you can before the start of your study. The list of visa documents can vary depending on the country that the Korean consulate is located in.

Note for degree-seeking students from the People’s Republic of China

You will not receive a certificate of admission from the Center for International Faculty and Student Services. Instead, first, you must submit to the Center all documents required by Konkuk and the Seoul Immigration Office. Then, the Center will ask the immigration office to issue a visa issuance approval number. After receiving this number from the Center, you must visit the nearest Korean consulate with the number and other required documents to apply for a visa.
