Undergraduate Program
Normally a 4-year program (a 6-year program for the School of Medicine and the School of Dentistry) of study, resulting in the conferral of a Bachelor’s degree upon acquisition of the prescribed number of credits. The new semester begins in April. The classes and examinations at each of the departments at Niigata University are conducted in Japanese.
Applying for Special Selection as a Privately-funded International Student
Applications to Niigata University are accepted at the end of January every year, with selection taking place at the end of February. Applicants will be selected based on their results of the “Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students” (EJU) and examination at Niigata University, and their TOEFL results depending on the program.

● Apply through general selection, as would a Japanese person
● Apply as an International Student funded by the Japanese Government (Recipient of a Japanese government (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, “MEXT”) scholarship)
Master’s Program
Normally a 2-year program of study, resulting in the conferral of a Master’s degree upon acquisition of the prescribed number of credits required for the relevant course, receipt of the required guidance, and success in final and thesis examinations.
The new semester begins in April or October. (Some faculties only accept enrollment in April.) Some courses are taught in English. Entrance exam contents vary by faculty.

Tuition and Fee Waivers for International Students
International students meeting certain academic standards who are facing financial difficulties may apply for an exemption of all or half tuition and admission fees. Fee waivers are awarded based on demonstrated academic ability and financial need of the students.
