If your first language is not English and if your previous degree has not been taught entirely in English, you will be required to provide evidence of your English language ability. Each programme page indicates the level of English required. Please note that our standard requirements have increased slightly from 2014 entry. Follow the links in the table to find more information about how to take each type of test.
Students who require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK
You may be aware that UK Visas and Immigration have recently updated their list of approved English language tests. Please note that if you are coming to LSE to study a degree level programme, we will continue to accept the tests below (including all test centres), and you do not need to worry about these changes. Further guidance on visas an immigration can be found on the International Student Immigration Service pages.

You may be required to achieve a higher score at the discretion of the selectors. If you have not yet taken any English test, we recommend that you take the IELTS test.
*For tests taken before the new Cambridge English Scale was introduced, we will use the online converter to determine your score equivalence. If you are taking a Cambridge test rather than the IELTS, we prefer the Advanced or Proficiency tests.
These are minimum requirements. You may need additional language instruction before you can register to be confident that you can participate fully in your programme. Experience has shown that students who are fully proficient in English are best placed to make the most of all that LSE has to offer, both academically and socially.
