If you don’t have the formal qualifications for immediate entry to a degree course, you can take a foundation course. Sometimes known as extended degrees, these courses help you prepare for degree-level studies and gain the necessary academic background.

On successful completion, you will then progress to the first year of a relevant degree course.

  Our foundation courses are:

BA Arts and Humanities (extended arts and humanities courses)

BSc Business Studies with Foundation Year

BSc Earth and Environmental Sciences with Foundation Year

BSc Interdisciplinary Science (extended science courses)

BA Social Science (extended social sciences courses)

  BSc Studies in Science

We also offer a part-time evening foundation course Preparation to Higher Education (PHE), run through the Lifelong Learning Centre.

  International students

International Foundation Year programmes — intended for academically able international students who wish to study at a British university but do not yet have the qualifications they need to start an undergraduate degree programme.

  Applying

If you would like to be considered for a place on one of the Integrated IFY programmes, you should apply directly to the University of Leeds. These programmes are not in the UCAS scheme so you do not need to complete a UCAS form and it does not cost anything to apply.

You can apply either online, by completing an interactive application form and emailing it to us or by downloading and completing a paper application form and posting, scanning or faxing it to us. Of these three methods you are strongly recommended to apply online if possible since this will enable you to keep a careful track of your application. Whichever method you choose you should complete your application as fully as possible since our decision will be based on the information you provide. It is not normally possible to arrange an individual interview.

You must complete every section of the paper application form as fully as possible. In particular, you should include the following:

The name of the undergraduate degree you wish to study after the International Foundation Year element.

Details of any examinations you still have to take.

Details of any examinations you have taken but for which you have not yet received the results.

Details of all the examinations you have taken for which your results are known. Please include copies of any certificates or documents which show these results.

All applications receive equal treatment, irrespective of race, gender, educational background, sexual orientation or disabilities. For further information please consult our Admissions Policy

  When to apply

The deadline by which applications should be received in Leeds is normally June 30th. However, you are strongly recommended to apply well in advance of June 30th to allow yourself time to make the necessary arrangements if you are offered a place. Please remember that you will need to allow yourself sufficient time to do the following:

to apply for a visa if you require one to enter the United Kingdom

  to make your travelling arrangements

to apply for University accommodation, if you wish to do so.
