The Foundation Studies Program (FSP) is available to international students who need to upgrade their academic skills to meet the entry requirements for UTAS undergraduate degrees. Successful completion of this program gives direct entry to all undergraduate degree courses. Please note that entry to all programs is conditional upon final Foundation results, and meeting the minimum GPA required for Medicine, Pharmacy and Nursing does not guarantee entry, due to limited availability of places.
The Program has one intake annually, starting in February each year. It is delivered across two semesters, in line with the University semester dates.
Course structure
The Foundation Studies Program develops the broad attributes required by students entering university in Australia. Students choose from either the Business & Arts stream or Science, Health & Engineering. Within the 2 streams, students must undertake 2 compulsory unites and 3 electives.
Subjects
All students must complete the following:
English for Tertiary Studies 1 & 2
Ideas & Critical Thinking 1 & 2
Students also study three elective subjects that are relevant to their future university program and which incorporate lectures, tutorials, practical lab sessions and research.
Elective subjects include:
Foundation Mathematics 1 & 2
Mathematics S&E 1 & 2
Business Management
Business Marketing
Chemistry Dynamics
Chemistry of Materials
Evolutionary Biology
Ecological Biology
Physics 1 & 2
Computer Essentials
Creative Computing
Behavioural Psychology
Psychology in Practice
Legal Studies 1 & 2
Note delivery of each elective is not guaranteed if there are insufficient numbers to form a class and not all subjects are available every semester
English Entry Requirements
The English language requirement for the Foundation Studies Program is a minimum overall IELTS score of 5.5, with no individual band score less than 5.0, or TOEFL/PTE equivalent.
Alternative entry
Those students who have not met the English requirements can do so by enrolling in a UTASAccess language course at the English Language Centre. The length of study will be determined by the student's level of English at enrolment and the time taken to attain success at Level 4 of the UTASAccess course.
For example, students with IELTS 5.0 and no band less than 4.5 will be placed in Level 4 and can enter the Foundation Studies program with a minimum of 5 weeks study if they achieve the required results at this level. However, students should be prepared to take further modules at the same level if they are not successful.
Students who successfully complete the UTASAccess program at Level 4 can then enter the FSP directly with no further IELTS testing required.
