Graduate Studies in Biology
The Biology graduate program is the largest and one of the most dynamic in the faculty. About 50 core and adjunct professors supervise thesis-based Masters and Doctoral student projects.
Admission Requirements
International Applicants
Master's Program (MSc)
For admission to the Master’s program, applicants must have, or expect to receive, a four-year B.Sc. degree from an accredited university, and provide evidence of scholarly achievement. The program requires at least a 78% overall average (based on our grading scale) in the last two full-time years of the undergraduate degree. International students enrolled May 2015 or later are not eligible for transfer to the doctoral program.
Applicants whose first language is not English must also provide proof of proficiency in English. Minimum requirements are as follows,
-(TOEFL) Minimum 600 on the paper-based version, 250 on the computer based version, or 100 on the iBT version with no score less than 23 of the 4 skill categories. Western's TOEFL ID is 0984.
-(IELTS) Minimum 6.0 overall and in each of the four categories.
Application Procedure
Online Application
Once the application is submitted and the payment cleared, the School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies will forward your application for consideration by the department.
The online application will collect the following information:
-Biographical information
-Contact information
-Academic background
-Professional background (if applicable)
-Referee information (see below)
-Proficiency in English Scores, if applicable; applicant must have testing service send test report to Western
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Western's TOEFL ID is 0984.
The International English Language Testing Service (IELTS) of the British Council.

Additional documents uploaded directly to your application in Portable Document Format (PDF):
Transcripts from all post-secondary institutions
-CV (listing past work experience, publications, awards/scholarships, certificates, etc).
-Statement of Research Interest
-Publications (if applicable)
-Landing papers (if applicable). For permanent residents of Canada only, please include a photocopy of both sides of your Permanent Resident Card or a photocopy of your Record of Landing. If you are applying to be a permanent resident, but have not been granted landed-immigrant status, you must apply as an international applicant. If you have received notification of being an "In Principle Permanent Resident", please upload an electronic copy of the document confirming this status to your application.
