Tuition fees are calculated per academic year (1 September to 31 August), and you will need to pay fees for each month that you are registered at the university. How much you are required to pay depends on your nationality and your study programme.
Non-EU/EEA nationals
Students who are nationals of countries outside the EU/EEA, Switzerland or Suriname pay higher fees. This is because the government does not subsidise non-EU students, so universities must determine the tuition fees for these students on the basis of costs. Leiden University determines the fees each year for each programme.

Students following non-government subsidised programmes
Several master’s programmes at Leiden University are not covered by government subsidies. This means that all students pay the same tuition fees, regardless of nationality.
Can I be exempted from paying the higher tuition fee?
That depends. Students who are not EU/EEA, Swiss or Surinamese nationals are entitled to pay the ‘home fee’ if they hold a residence permit which entitles them to a Dutch student grant (studiefinanciering) from the education agency DUO.
