  REQUIREMENTS

  Your application will not be considered complete until all the following items have been received:

  A completed Graduate School application (paper or online) with a Statement of Purpose.

  Three letters of recommendation from individuals who can comment on your academic potential.

  Official transcripts from all universities attended

  Official GRE General Test results sent directly from Educational Testing Services (ETS)

  $55 application fee

  International students who studied at a university outside of the U.S. should submit official TOEFL or IELTS results

  Eligibility Requirements

  GENERAL REQUIREMENTS

  Applicants must hold a baccalaureate or graduate degree from an accredited college or university.

  Applicants must meet any admission requirements set by the degree program in addition to those set by the Graduate School.

  Applicants whose academic work has been superior are admitted upon the approval of the degree program and the Dean of the Graduate School.

  Evaluation Criteria

  GPA: A grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in the undergraduate major is required, but requirements may vary among programs and may be higher than 3.0.

  GRE or GMAT: Applicant must obtain a satisfactory score on the GRE General Test, except for the Art program. Programs in the Collins College of Business require the GMAT.

  Fitness of character may also be considered as part of the admission process.

  International Applicants

  International applicants must hold a degree comparable to a regionally accredited U.S. bachelor’s degree and must have a record of strong academic performance comparable to a “B” or above average grades.

  Applicants for whom English is not their first language must take the TOEFL or IELTS and have an official copy of their results sent to The University of Tulsa Graduate School.

  Applicants must submit a certified letter of financial support or a certified Confirmation of Financial Resources form.

  Applicants must submit to the Graduate School a copy of the personal data page from their passport before an I-20 can be issued.

  After all application materials have been received, two weeks are normally required to process an application. International students who require visas should allow at least four months for completed processing of all paperwork.

  Applications and transcripts will be held on file, and admission decisions will be valid for one calendar year.

  Special Application Requirements

  Applicants to the following graduate degree programs should carefully note these additional application requirements:

  The English Language and Literature program requires a 10-20 page academic writing sample. Alsodoctoral English applicants should note at the end of their personal statement the foreign languages in which they are proficient or fluent. Please note if your proficiency is in the written language, oral, or both.

  The History program requires a 10-20 page academic writing sample (preferably from a history class).

  The Clinical Psychology program requires all applicants to submit a curriculum vitae. A writing sample is optional and should demonstrate your scholarly capability. Suggested writing samples include a copy of an undergraduate honors thesis, manuscript submission, or paper presented at a conference. These materials should be emailed to the Graduate School at grad@utulsa.edu.

  All graduate programs in the Art department (including the MTA degree program) require all applicants to submit a portfolio consisting of 20 images of recent works (maximum three details) that adequately represent the focus of the applicant’s creative efforts. The GRE General Test is not required for Art applicants to the MFA and MA programs.

  The Museum Science and Management program requires a 10-15 page academic writing sample.

  All graduate Business programs require applicants to submit a resume.

  English Language Requirements for International Students

  The minimum TOEFL and IELTS scores accepted by The University of Tulsa for international applicants are 80 on the internet-based test and 550 on the paper TOEFL exam, or 6.0 on the IELTS, for graduate programs in Engineering & Natural Sciences and 90 on the internet-based test and 575 on the paper TOEFL exam, or 6.5 on the IELTS, for graduate programs in Business and all other graduate programs. Individual graduate programs may have higher standards.

  An applicant who presents a TOEFL score between 70 and 80, or an IELTS score between 5.5 and 6.0, for programs in the College of Engineering and Natural Sciences and a TOEFL score between 80 and 90, or an IELTS score between 6.0 and 6.5, for all other programs, must take either ENGL 6033 “Writing for Graduate Students” or CDSP 2013 “Essentials of Spoken English for International Students” and/or enroll in the English Institute for International Students (EIIS). Advanced students in EIIS may take up to three (3) credit hours of course work in his or her degree program while fulfilling this requirement. Additional enrollment in undergraduate prerequisites, or in EIIS, will be necessary in order to maintain full-time enrollment status. He or she must take the TOEFL and raise the score to the required minimal level before any future enrollment for graduate credit.

  Any student whose TOEFL score is below 70, or an IELTS score below 5.5, for the College of Engineering and Natural Sciences and a TOEFL score below 80, or an IELTS score below 6.0, for all other programs, must enroll in the EIIS full-time until he or she achieves the required score on the TOEFL.

  TOEFL or IELTS scores must be received prior to arrival at The University of Tulsa, preferably with the student’s application form. The University of Tulsa will not accept institutional TOEFL scores to satisfy English proficiency requirements with the exception of its own institutional TOEFL. The only exception to this policy is for students who have applied to the College of Engineering and Natural Sciences and who have complete Level 112 in the ELS Language Center.

  If the student has received his or her degree from a country in which English is the primary language, the TOEFL may be waived, upon petition, at the discretion of the Graduate Dean.

  PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING DEPARTMENTAL EXCEPTIONS:Chemical Engineering and Geosciences require a minimum TOEFL score of 85 on the internet-based test or 563 on the paper exam. The minimum IELTS score is 6.5

  Geosciences requires thesis and doctoral applicants to have a minimum TOEFL score of 90 on the internet-based test, with at least a score of 22 on the Writing subsection.
