English language requirements
If your first language is not English you must provide evidence of a satisfactory level of English language proficiency. You can submit your application without an English result and provide this at a later date.
Please Note: If you are an NCEA student, only the NCEA literacy requirement will be acceptable.
The most commonly used English language tests we recognise are as follows:
IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 6.0 in the academic module (with no individual band below 6.0)
Paper-based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 550 (TWE 4.5)
Internet-based TOEFL of 80 with a writing score of 20
IB International Baccalaureate - English at Higher or Standard level in Language A: literature, Language A: language and literature, or at Higher level in Language B
University of Otago Foundation Studies Ltd - successful completion of ‘English for Undergraduate Academic Purposes’ paper
The following programmes require higher levels of achievement than the minimum requirements listed above:
Applicants for the Bachelor of Teaching or Bachelor of Education Studies are required to provide an IELTS of 7.0 with no individual band below 7.0
Applicants for the Bachelor of Oral Health are required to provide an IELTS of 7.0
General Entrance Requirements

Appropriate Gaokao score and Senior High School graduation; or Senior High School graduation and one year of successful study at a recognised institution of university standing; or Senior High School graduation and completion of a diploma with high passing grades at a recognised institute or university.
China - Gaokao Requirements for Direct Entry to Undergraduate Programmes in 2017– (based on 2016 Gaokao scores)
Beginning from July 2016, the University of Otago welcomes applications from Chinese students who have successfully completed ‘Gaokao’ examinations.
The table below outlines the tier 1 Gaokao scores required for entry into undergraduate programmes at the University of Otago. These provincial scores are subject to change annually and are only applicable to students who have completed Gaokao in the year noted above. Applications from Gaokao tier 1 students should include the Gaokao examination report, Senior High School transcript and Senior High School graduation diploma.
Some undergraduate programmes have additional entry criteria which need to be satisfied alongside the Gaokao results listed below. You will also need to satisfy the University’s English language requirements
