　　One of the world’s leading financial centers and most densely populated pieces of land, Hong Kong has long been regarded as a meeting point for different cultures, offering a truly international outlook and atmosphere.

　　Just outside of the top 10 in the QS Best Student Cities 2017, Hong Kong performs particularly well in the University Rankings category of the index, thanks to its impressive collection of internationally ranked universities. It also gets a strong score for Employer Activity, reflecting its status an in-demand site for graduate recruitment, and is within the top 25 for Student Mix, thanks to its fairly large and diverse student community.

　　Leading institutions in the city include the University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) and the Chinese University of Hong Kong – all ranked within the global top 50, while four more Hong Kong institutions also feature in the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017.

　　In terms of affordability, the picture is somewhat complex. With space at a premium, rent is known for being exorbitantly expensive, but general living expenses such as eating out and transport remain low. International tuition fees are somewhere in the mid-range – much lower than studying in the US, for example, but higher than those charged in Western European countries such as France or Germany.

　　If you value peace, quiet and personal space, then life in this packed and fast-paced metropolis might be a little daunting, but for those who want to experience city life in its most heightened form, Hong Kong is without doubt one of the most dynamic and diverse study destinations around.

　　QS Best Student Cities ranking: 11th

　　While rival Canadian city Montréal occupies the overall top spot in the QS Best Student Cities 2017, withVancouver in 10th place, Toronto remains an extremely strong contender. In fact, it has the highest score of any city in the Desirability category of the index (one of the six areas assessed), reflecting both its all-round high quality of life and its status as an in-demand destination amongst students worldwide.

　　All the attractions that make Canada an appealing place to study are on offer here in its largest city – a diverse community, vibrant cultural scene and nightlife, stunning natural surrounds, and of course world-leading universities. The highest-ranked of these is the University of Toronto, currently placed 32nd in the world (just two places behind Montréal’s McGill University).

　　In the student survey which fed into this year’s results, the word most often used to sum up the appeal of Toronto is “diversity” – in reference both to the huge range of activities the city has to offer, and the diverse and inclusive quality of its community. One respondent commented, “It's a very inclusive, multicultural and diverse city,” while another praised “the amount to see/explore when you have time, and the diverse quality of people that you meet.”

　　Welcome to Sydney, the world’s 13th best city for international students in 2017, according to the QS Best Student Cities index.

　　Although Melbourne takes the crown as Australia’s leading student city, Sydney remains a very strong rival. In fact, in the Desirability category of the index, Sydney comes second in the world (behindToronto), reflecting the all-round high quality of life in the city, as well as its popularity among prospective students. It also comes second in the world for Student Mix, thanks to its large, diverse and inclusive student community, and is within the top 10 for Employer Activity.

　　In common with other Australian study hubs, Sydney’s weakest score comes in the Affordability category, due to the combination of relatively high international tuition fees and substantial living costs. But it’s easy to see why so many international students find ways to cover the costs; the combination of education and lifestyle Sydney offers makes for a highly attractive proposition.

　　As well as being Australia’s financial and economic hub, Sydney is known for the stunning panorama of its harbor, iconic opera house, large selection of green spaces within the city, and proximity to beaches which are among the most paradisiacal not just in Australia but anywhere in the world. 　　QS Best Student Cities ranking: 14th

　　Small but densely populated, Singapore's reputation as a center of educational excellence has flourished in recent years. Its top universities, the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) now rank 12th and 13th respectively in the QS World University Rankings®. This year the city falls slightly in the QS Best Student Cities index, but at 14th overall, it remains one of the most desirable student destinations in Asia and indeed the world.

　　Alongside growing prominence in the global higher education sector, Singapore remains renowned for its prosperity and low levels of crime and unemployment. In keeping with the city’s strong corporate reputation, Singaporean graduates are much sought-after by international employers, especially throughout Asia, and the city comes 11th in the Employer Activity category of the index.

　　The downside to Singapore's high standard of living is correspondingly high prices. Singapore is ranked the 4th most expensive out of 209 cities in Mercer’s 2016 Cost of Living Survey, and tuition fees have also increased in recent years, particularly for international students.

　　On the plus side, one thing you certainly won't need to shell out for in Singapore is central heating; its position next to the equator means it is equally scorching all year round. And if you fancy exchanging the concrete jungle for the real thing, Singapore is surrounded by tropical scenery, both throughout adjacent Malaysia, and in nearby exotic destinations such as Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam and the Philippines.

　　Renowned for its prosperity, orderliness and low taxes, Zurich may sound more like a place for millionaires than international students, but look a little closer and you’ll see it certainly deserves its place among the world’s top student cities.

　　Currently ranked 8th in the world, ETH Zurich is the highest-ranked university in continental Europe – and the highest rankings entry from outside the US or UK. The University of Zurich is also ranked within the top 100 in the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017, placing 80th.

　　An international hub, Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland and among the wealthiest in Europe – which brings both pros and cons for international students. On the one hand, its affluence means Zurich is clean, safe and immaculately maintained, frequently ranking among the world’s most livable cities. But on the other, living expenses can be eye-wateringly high.

　　That said, while rent and socializing may cost a packet, international tuition fees in Switzerland are relatively low, so the overall costs of studying in Zurich are likely to be considerably lower compared to cities in the UK, US or Australia, for example.

　　And it’s certainly tough to beat Zurich when it comes to scenery; situated on the banks of picturesque Lake Zurich and with the stunning Swiss Alps within day-trip reach, this city would suit those who want to combine the attractions of city life with close proximity to some of Europe’s most beautiful natural landscapes.
