  Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics

  The Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics draws students and faculty from around the world to develop the next generation of aircraft, spacecraft and launch vehicles. Student and faculty research spans new technologies used in aerospace, biomedical, computer, and automotive industries, among others. With an emphasis on mechanics, the AEM Department ensures students are well grounded in the fundamentals of engineering and can become exceptional contributors to this exciting industry.

  Tradition of excellence

  The Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics was one of the first 10 aerospace engineering programs accredited nationwide. Among its alumni are two former astronauts, as well as leaders at NASA and a multitude of aerospace engineering companies.

  World-class academic programs

  Offering a comprehensive curriculum for both undergraduate and graduate students, students have opportunities for hands-on learning and research including a senior capstone project where they work as a team to design, construct, and test an aircraft or space craft. Graduate students embrace a rigorous curriculum with research working alongside award-winning faculty. The Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics (BAEM) is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.

  Department of Biomedical Engineering

  The Department of Biomedical Engineering is home to innovative research and interdisciplinary education that apply engineering principles and techniques to problems in medicine and biology. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, biomedical engineering will be one of the fastest-growing occupations through 2018.

  Tradition of excellence

  The Biomedical Engineering Department is one of the fastest-growing departments in the college, attracting students who graduate to work in many local and worldwide medical device companies. Faculty researchers and industry alumni have played key roles in developing ground-breaking research and implementing innovative medical technologies.

  World-class academic programs

  The undergraduate degree program combines a broad foundation in biology, medicine, and technology. Graduate students have access to more than 70 potential research advisors in the University’s Academic Health Center and the College of Science and Engineering. Students and faculty benefit from close collaborations with the University’s medical school and teaching hospital. Unique opportunities exist for research projects sponsored by local medical device companies. The Bachelor of Biomedical Engineering (BBmE) is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.

  Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science

  The Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science is a top-tier, internationally competitive department with two thriving programs–chemical engineering and materials science and engineering. The undergraduate and graduate degree programs prepare students for careers in energy, biotechnology, medicine, microelectronics, pharmaceuticals, and polymer science.

  Tradition of excellence

  With roots extending to the later 19th century, the department has a long history as a nationwide leader. Prominent alumni include the inventors of the Post-it Note, Gore-Tex, and gluebond sandpaper, many executives at 3M, the former Global Climate and Energy Project director, and professors who helped build chemical engineering programs at other leading universities.

  The Department of Chemistry provides a world-class education through its classroom teaching, and creates new scientific knowledge through cutting-edge research aimed at solving some of society’s most important human health, energy, and environmental problems.

  Tradition of excellence

  The Department of Chemistry has been a national and international leader since its inception. Prominent alumni and former faculty include the inventors of synthetic rubber and Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide, the pioneer of Kodak photo processes, and two Nobel Prize winners. Fifty-nine chemistry alumni have received the Outstanding Achievement Award. Current faculty members include 12 Distinguished McKnight University Professors, three Regents Professors, and two are members of the National Academy of Sciences and American Academy of Arts and Sciences。

  Students receive broad training in chemistry’s major subfields, apply modern techniques, and acquire a thorough understanding of tools and theories. Learning from world-renowned faculty, students have access to state-of-the-art equipment. Alumni work in industry, education, or government. In addition to teaching future chemists, chemistry courses are required for a variety of majors at the university.

  Department of Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering

  Programs in civil, environmental, and geo-engineering focus on designing sustainable infrastructure systems and developing environmentally responsible use of earth resources. Faculty are internationally recognized for research in landscape vulnerability assessment, wind energy, stream restoration, structural response to extreme loading, water treatment, environmental remediation, seismic imaging and material characterization, traffic control and safety, and hydraulic fracturing.

  Tradition of excellence

  The department dates back to more than a century. Minnesota’s first wastewater treatment plant was designed by a faculty member. Alumni include founders of major engineering firms, the first female engineer in the Wisconsin Highway Commission, a pioneer in industrial pollution control, and leaders in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Transportation Research Board.

  World-class academics

  Students study sustainable water supplies, structural monitoring, stormwater runoff treatment, and public health. The civil engineering program focuses its core courses on environmental, geomechanics, structures, transportation, and water resources. Students can put their ideas into action through undergraduate research and by participating in social entrepreneurship through the Acara Challenge. The Bachelor of Civil Engineering (B.C.E.) and Bachelor of Geoengineering (B.GeoE.) are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.
