  1.University of Strathclyde

The University of Strathclyde was founded in 1796, making it one of the oldest higher education institutions in Glasgow, Scotland. Initially founded under the name The Andersonian Institute, it holds the distinction of being the first technological university, receiving this distinction in 1964.

The University of Strathclyde is situated on the John Anderson campus, named after the university’s founder. A large self-contained campus close to the city centre, it offers numerous student union and sports related facilities including football and rugby pitches, as well as indoor badminton courts and gym facilities. Academic facilities include a new Technology and Innovation centre opened in July 2015, as well as specialised pharmaceutical facilities.

The campus’s close proximity to Glasgow city centre also allows for easy access to the various activities available within the city itself, as well as access to extensive transport links. As well as this, the campus has close to 2,000 rooms available for accommodation, primarily for first year undergraduates.

The university offers a range of subjects, but has a focus on technological and scientific studies. Research is also an important part of Strathclyde’s offerings, with key focuses on health, manufacturing and energy, among others. Also on offer are a wide variety of partnerships with businesses as well as other higher education institutions, both inside and outside of the UK.

Being that it is such a long-running and well-established institution, the University of Strathclyde has a proud line of alumni, including Team GB swimmer Robbie Renwick, inventor John Logie Baird, explorer David Livingstone and comedian Ed Byrne.

  2.University of Bath

Founded in 1966 the University of Bath is located in the south west of England, in what is commonly regarded as one of the most beautiful cities in the UK.

Famed for its Georgian architecture and acres of green space, Bath was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and is home to an abundance of historic sites, theatres and museums, including the Jane Austen museum, which celebrates the life of the author in her hometown.

Austen may have been before the university’s time but the institution boasts notable alumni spanning a wide range of disciplines, including founder of the Centre for Statistics in Medicine, Professor Douglas G Altman, television producer Ash Atalla and rugby player Steve Borthwick.

The university is organised across four faculties: engineering and design, humanities and social science, management and science. It has gained particular recognition for its research facilities and in 2014 the Research Excellence Framework graded 87% of Bath’s research activities as being ‘world leading/internationally excellent’.

In 2012, the university began a three year campus improvement project to improve and expand teaching space, student accommodation, including a new £10million arts centre.

Sports are central to the Bath experience: the university has among the best sports facilities in the UK. In the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, Bath hosted a range of international teams and lays claim to several Olympic medal-winners who trained at the university.

More than 15,000 students are enrolled at Bath, with more than a quarter of them coming from outside the UK and representing 100 nationalities.

Employment rates for graduates are higher than average, something the university attributes to the work placements offered with every degree course and its emphasis on practical, ‘real life’ skills that employers value.

Bath boasts active partnerships with a wide range of commercial organisations, including Rolls Royce, L'Oréal, The World Bank, Nike, Airbus and Ford.

  3.Lancaster University

Lancaster University is a collegiate university in the UK city of Lancaster and a member of the N8 Research Partnership: an association of the eight most research intensive universities in the North of England.

The university dates back to 1947 when a public meeting in Lancaster supported the proposal for a university college to be founded in the city, although it was 1964 before its first students were admitted. Its original site was in St Leonard’s Gate in the middle of the city. Today, the campus occupies a picturesque, 360-acre parkland site three miles from the city centre.

Lancaster is one of just a few universities within the UK to have a collegiate system. It is home to nine colleges overall, eight for undergraduate students and one for postgraduates.

The campus has the feel of a small town with banks, shops, cafes, restaurants, bars, a pre-school centre and health services.

Students can also enjoy the campus’s own theatre and art gallery, home to an international art collection that includes Japanese and Chinese art, antiquities, and works by 20th century British and European artists, including Miró and Ernst.

The university is located close to mountains and the sea. The Lake District National Park and the Forest of Bowland, areas of outstanding natural beauty, are both within close proximity.

Lancaster has a strong reputation globally. Its international partnerships with higher education institutions include Sunway University College in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, the GD Goenka World Institute in India, COMSATS in Pakistan, and the Brazil- based Federal University of Lavras.

  4.University of Leeds

The University of Leeds is a redbrick university in the city of Leeds, West Yorkshire.

Officially founded in the early 20th century, the university’s origins can be traced back to the 19th century, when the Yorkshire College of Science was established. It was one of the first colleges in the UK for students of all faiths and backgrounds, set up to challenge the exclusivity of Oxford and Cambridge.

Initially the college focussed purely on scientific studies before eventually introducing Classics, History and Modern Literature. This led the Yorkshire College of Science to become the Yorkshire College and in 1904, King Edward VII granted Leeds its own Charter as an independent institution.

Today, the University of Leeds is among the Russell Group of research-intensive universities. It offers over 500 undergraduate and more than 200 postgraduate-degree courses.

Leeds is split into nine faculties, they include: Arts, Social Sciences and Law, Engineering, Environment, Mathematics and Physical Sciences, Medicine and Health and Performance and Visual Arts.

With over 30,000 students – 5,000 of them international, from more than 100 countries – the university prides itself on being a multicultural and international institution.

Its partnership with Southwest Jiaotong University in Chengdu, China was the first overseas school to be set up by the University of Leeds and offers students a unique UK-Chinese engineering curriculum.

The university is located on a single-site campus, just a short walk from Leeds’ vibrant city centre, with access to art galleries, museums, shopping and sports facilities, as well as green spaces.

  5.Loughborough University

Loughborough University has the largest single-site green campus in the UK and is situated in the county of Leicestershire.

Founded in 1909 as a small Technical Institute offering courses in technical subjects, science and art, it now has 19 different schools and departments. It was awarded its Charter in 1966 making it the Loughborough University of Technology before assuming its current name in 1996.

Despite a clear technological history, it is impossible to talk about Loughborough University without mentioning sport. It is both nationally and internationally recognised for its excellence in this department. Notable sporting personalities that have passed through Loughborough include world-record breaking athletes such as Sebastian Coe and Paula Radcliffe, as well as World Cup-winning England rugby coach Clive Woodward.

As well as acting as the official preparation camp for Team GB in the 2012 London Olympics, past and present Loughborough students accumulated a total of 35 medals at the 2014 Commonwealth Games (if it had been classed as a country in its own right, Loughborough would have finished 11th in the 2012 medal table).

The university’s outstanding sporting facilities come complete with an indoor athletics centre, an outdoor stadium and a 50m swimming pool.

Loughborough’s library contains over 500,000 books, 90,000 bound serials and access to around 30,000 electronic journals.

With the launch of Loughborough University London, the institutions has increased its postgraduate presence with a campus at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford.

Loughborough is a frequent front-runner in the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey, an annual survey of UK undergraduates.
