首先来看看个人陈述一般从哪些方面下手。
1.为什么选择该专业？（该专业是否是事先你的职业目标的最适合的专业？）
2.你的长期职业目标，短期职业目标（研究生毕业后）？
3.你过往的学习，工作，生活经历如何塑造了你，并确立了这个职业目标？
4.你为实现此目标做了哪些努力，取得了什么成就（学到了哪些知识，技能）？
5.为什么选择选择该项目？（你讲如何利用该项目的一切资源实现你的职业目标）
三个潜在的Personal Statement话题组合：
Personal Statement Topic #1： 讲一个故事，来说明自己有多么在乎写作（writing）和法律（law），并且说一下自己是如何有责任心（responsible）——当然，这些看起来很乏味。
Personal Statement Topic #2： 讲一讲自己是如何集一个头脑灵活、善于分析（analytical）和体格健壮（athletic）、热爱运动（runner）于一身的——这应该听起来会更有趣，但好像还缺点意思 。
Personal Statement Topic #3： 讲述一个聪明（intelligent）有干劲（driven）的资深扑克玩家（poker）对金融（finance）充满兴趣的故事——我当时对这个主题很满意，很有趣很吸引人。

分析学校背后的动机
首先，出于更好地衡量学生之前的学习经历以及未来学习方向，引进学校认为更合适的学生入读的目的。美国各个学校提高了入学门槛，审核趋于严格，部分学校和部分专业已经明确学生需要提供PS。
一般情况下，学生需要提交的申请的必要材料分为两大类：一是学术类：即在读证明、毕业证、成绩单、语言成绩单等(雅思、托福等);二是身份类，即：护照、出生证明公证等。但如果学生尤其是申请硕士及更高学位的学生能提供导师的推荐信、实习证明、实习证明、简历、学习计划、PS等则更有助于申请。
但在学生申请签证时，有一种情况需要提供PS在签证部分材料里，如学生背景比较复杂或是签证风险比较高的情况，个人陈述用来证明学生留学目的，以及解释自己的情况。签证时如果要求补充PS，多是有助于美国移民局更多了解学生的动机是否单纯出于学习目的，比如在学生有空白学习经历时，会要求提供PS来证明学生的留学目的等。
所以美国留学PS的书写针对院校和签证两类对象会有不同的素材准备要求。
申请对象是学校
在申请时，书写的内容多为学习计划。它可以涉及多方面，除可以强调个人的学习成绩外，还可以写自己与申请专业相关的见解等，也可以提到在申请专业领域中，该申请学校有哪些学者、教授或是研究方向感兴趣(更适用申请研究型硕士及以上学位课程)，以及报考该学校和专业的原因，以及今后准备从哪些方面入手，最终努力的方向等。
如果学生在国内的学习期间参与过课外活动、社团，或是公益活动等也可以在文中涉及，外国学校也会看重学生学术外的经历。但需要注意的是，不要仅仅描述该活动，还要提到该项活动对你的意义和对日后学习的帮助等。
签证对象是移民局
而在签证环节，则只是在学生出现特殊经历时需要补充PS来证明学生的真正目的是留学。书写的内容则多注重个人基本情况介绍，所受教育经历，工作经历，为什么选择赴澳留学?为什么选择该学校?为什么选择该专业学习?学成后的计划?等部分，总篇幅大约800-1000字。

Tianjin, China, my birth place and living city has always attracted me with her diverse cultures which endow me with rich cultural background. I remember during my childhood, I was very curious about different styles of buildings, when walking on the street with my mom. As I grew up, I got to know that among the first cities in China to open international trade, Tianjin has a long cultural history, in which Chinese culture mixes well with that of foreign countries.
