Your aid award at Carolina will include a mix of funding. It depends on your financial need, the kind of funding available, and the timing of your application (earlier is better).
Grants – Gift money (funds you don’t have to pay back) from federal, state, University, or private funds. Grants are awarded on the basis of financial need.
Scholarships – Gift money (funds you don’t have to pay back). Scholarships are awarded for academic achievement, individual talent, or other unique criteria specified by a donor. Some scholarships are based on financial need, but not all.
University Scholarships are those awarded by UNC or foundations directly tied to the University. The Morehead-Cain and Robertson scholarships require separate applications; all others are awarded on the basis of your UNC Admissions application.
Outside Scholarships are those the student brings to the University from “outside” sources, like a church, nonprofit, or community organization. Outside scholarships are counted toward meeting the student’s aid eligibility; that is, a student’s total financial aid package from all sources cannot exceed the student’s aid eligibility.
Loans – Money borrowed from federal sources, University sources, or private lenders that require repayment.
