  A

Martyn Harris looks back on his experience of being trained to appear on TV.

I am terrible on TV. I don‘t sit straight and I don‘t talk clearly. It bothers, because I know inside I am smart, sensitive and sincere. Television can make any fool look like an intellectual, but I come over as dishonest. After a disastrous TV show last year, when I called the interviewer by the wrong name, I was reluctant to ever do broadcasting again.

Until now, that is. I have my first novel out next month, which is called Do It Again, and the

advertising people tell me I must go on TV to promote it. Which is how I find myself practising my television interviewing technique with two consultants from Public Image Ltd.

‗He blinks(眨眼) a lot, doesn‘t he?‘ says Diana, the speech specialist, studying my image on a video monitor. ‗And his crossed legs look defensive. But the voice isn‘t bad.‘ Jeannie, who is introduced to me as Public Image‘s ‗image consultant‘ takes a step backwards to study the general posture. ‗Needs to get his bottom back in the sofa. And the jacket makes him look a bit deformed. Where does he get his clothes from?‘

‗Honesty is the most important thing,‘ says Diana. ‗We don‘t want to turn people into actors. We want to bring out their personality. Then most importantly, there are the three E‘s: Energy, Enthusiasm and Enjoyment. And do try to stop blinking.‘

And so our practice interview begins. ‗So, what can you tell us about your book, Martyn?‘ ‗Umm …‘

A long pause. ‗Errr … ‗ A longer pause. ‗Tee hee, hargh … ‘ An foolish giggle. ‗All right,‘ says Diana patiently, ‗we‘ll try that again.‘ We try it again, many, many times, each time trying to solve a different problem that I have. On the second run-through, my crossed legs keep moving up and down, which makes me look as if I want to run away (I do, I do). On the third run they are uncrossed, but my hands are clenched in my lap. On the fourth my hands are fiddling with my ears.

But Diana is patient and gives me a lot of advice. She is very good at her job because on the final

run-through, after three hours or so, I really don‘t look too bad. Steady gaze, breathing clear and no blinking. Not perfect but not bad.

I‘m bursting with energy, enthusiasm and enjoyment and I‘m talking a lot of nonsense, but you‘d

hardly notice. When you watch people on TV, you‘ll see a lot more just like me.

Eleven-year-old Cammy Holmes was walking along the shores of Washington,D.C.‘s Anacostia River with her elder sister and a friend.Wearing gloves to protect their hands, they filled garbage bags with everything from fishing line and dirty plastic bottles to old grocery bags. The girls and about l50 others were volunteering in the International Coastal Cleanup,an annual event that raises awareness of the importance of keeping the world‘s waterways and oceans clean.

The cleanup was sponsored by an organization called the Ocean Conservancy that works to protect ocean animals and their homes.Unfortunately, a lot of trash never makes it into a trash can.It blows in the wind, and travels down streams and rivers to the sea.Trash isn‘t just ugly—it can be dangerous for creatures that live in the water.Every year, plastic trash like old fishing gear, shopping bags, and food wrappers kills one million sea birds and 1 00,000 sea mammals and sea turtles.Sometimes these animals get tangled(绞在一起)up in garbage and die.Sometimes they eat trash that chokes or poisons them.Sea turtles, for example, mistake plastic bags for the jellyfish they love to eat.

At the Anacostia River,Cammy helped the volunteers pick up 2,380 pounds of trash in just a few hours along three miles of shoreline.―When you hear about a coastal cleanup all you think is that you have to pick up trash,‖says Cammy.―But then you get there and find out it is actually fun! I like meeting all the other people and helping out the environment.‖This one-day event tells us something to keep in mind the other 364 days of the year: that we are all connected to the ocean, and that you can help keep the ocean clean by putting trash in the right place. In the past 21 years, volunteers with the International Coastal Cleanup have cleared millions of pounds of litter from 211,460 miles of coastline worldwide. That distance is the equivalent (等同物)of going around the Earth eight times! Humor is a most effective, yet frequently neglected, means of handling the difficult situations in our lives. It can be used for patching up differences, apologizing, saying ―no,‖ criticizing, getting the other

fellow to do what you want without his losing face .For some jobs, it‘s the only tool that can succeed. It is a way to discuss subjects so sensitive that serious dialogue may start a quarrel. For example, many believe that comedians on television are doing more today for racial and religious tolerance than people in any other forum.

Humor is often the best way to keep a small misunderstanding from escalating into a big deal .Recently a neighbor of mine had a squabble with his wife as she drove him to the airport .Airborne, he felt miserable, and he knew she did, too. Two hours after she returned home, she received a long-distance phone

call.―person-to-person for Mrs. I .A .Pologize,‖intoned the operator. ―That‘s spelled‗P‘as in….‖ .In a twinkling, the whole day changed from grim to lovely at both ends of the wire.

An English hostess with a quick wit was giving a formal dinner for eight distinguished guests whom she hoped to enlist in a major charity drive. Austerity(节俭) was a fashion in England at the time, and she had asked her children to serve the meal. She knew that anything could happen----and it did, just as her son, with the studied concentration of a tightrope walker ,brought in a large roast turkey. He successfully elbowed the swinging dining-room door, but the backswing threw the bird onto the dining-room floor.

The boy stood rooted: guests stared at their plates .Moving only her head the hostess smiled at her son, ―No harm, Daniel ,‖ she said. ―Just pick him up and take him back to the kitchen‖… she enunciated clearly so he would think about what she was saying … ―and bring in the other one .‖

A wink and a one-liner instantly changed the dinner from a red-faced embarrassment to a conspiracy of
