The infinitives of all regular verbs in Italian end in -are, -ere, or -ire and are referred to as first, second, or third conjugation verbs, respectively. In English, the infinitive (l'infinito) consists of "to" + verb. In Italian, the infinitive is composed of just one word. The initial part of the infinitive, called the stem, conveys the meaning of the word and is the form found in the dictionary.
