“I would almost rather see you dead.” Bobert S.Cassatt, a leading banker of Philadelphia, shoutedwhen his twenty-year-old eldest daughterannounced that she wanted to become an artist. Inthe 19th century, playing at drawing or painting ondishes was all right for a young lady, but seriouswork in art was not.
