  约翰·霍普金斯大学早期是一所著名的贵族大学。由富商、慈善事业家J.霍普金斯捐资于1876 年创办,校址在马里兰州的巴尔的摩。它以医科驰名于世,其排名仅次于哈佛大学。其他科目如:历史、美术、国际关系、政治科学、政治经济也相当出色。 该大学获赠的捐款在全美排在20名之内,所以设备良好,研究生院的科研项目都获得充分拨款,图书馆藏书丰富,并于24小时开放。 学校有学生近6千人,其中研究生1500人。学生读书风气高涨,一心一意追求知识;教授执教认真,敬业精神强。大学的医院是学生们搞临床研究的好去处,约翰•霍普金斯医院几乎年年被医学杂志评为最好的医院。该校所有跟生物沾亲带故的专业,都在美国名声斐然,其中包括生物医学工程、化学和生物化学等。其中公共健康研究生专业名列全美第1,保健服务专业全美第8,护理专业全美第14;工科类也不错,获全美研究生院排名第17。

  约翰霍普金斯大学是西半球第一所研究型大学,仿照威廉·洪堡等人所倡导的以柏林洪堡大学为代表的德国大学模式所建立的研究教育机构。 同时,约翰霍普金斯大学也是美国第一所以讨论班方式授课、第一所分专业录取本科生的大学,其理念和模式都后来的美国大学产生了巨大的影响并为之纷纷效仿,其中的典型例子如芝加哥大学。

  约翰霍普金斯大学开设1876年2月22号,就职的第一任总统,丹尼尔校长吉尔曼。他成立了一个研究型大学,致力于不仅为推动学生的知识,而且也为推动国家人类知识的普遍,通过研究和奖学金。霍普金斯一直处于领导地位,在教学和研究方面,近年来,美国约翰霍普金斯赢得了更多的联邦研究和开发经费比其他任何大学。

  霍普金斯大学的校友、教师和研究人员中先后有二十二位诺贝尔奖获得者。目前,还有两位在这里教书。
