My first job was working for a women’s clothes manufacturer at the age of 15. It made me realize what I didn’t want to do for my future employment.
The only advantage of this job was receiving a wage at the end of the week and sometimes getting clothes for free if they were to my taste. I carried on doing this for only a year, as my studies at school were getting more serious and I wanted to study more to get the right grades.
After I had finished college, my first real job was working for a play publisher in central London. I remember writing a letter of application for the post of administration for Samuel French Limited. I had put so much effort into writing it, not realizing that this would be my first step in the process of finding out what I really wanted to do for my future employment. I didn’t think I would get the job, but as it turned out, I got a telephone call quickly and started a week later. I remember being excited that I would be working for a publisher in London. Although I had thought I would prefer to work for a book publisher, a play publisher was just as enjoyable.
Looking back now, not all first jobs turn out to be enjoyable. Some of my friends worked in supermarkets while they were at college just to earn a bit of money. I remember thinking how much happier I felt working in a clothes factory than in a supermarket.
Years later, I can see how good it is to experience work at an early age, as it gives people the opportunity to decide what kind of career will be most suitable for them one day. The boring task of a job will make a person want to pursue an education to get into the right type of employment, which was what I had realized in the end.
60. The author did her first job for only a year because _______.
  A. the clothes made there didn’t suit her taste
  B. she really didn’t like such a boring job
  C. she wanted to get the right grades at school
  D. she didn’t get well paid at the end of the week
61. What can we learn about the author in the third paragraph?
  A. She was confident that she could get the first job.
  B. She telephoned Samuel French Limited for a post.
  C. She was aware of the importance of writing the application letter.
  D. She used to think she would prefer to work for a book publisher.
62. It could be inferred from the text that the author _______.
  A. took her first job in order to support her poor family
  B. realized what her first job meant to her future employment
  C. had a great interest in her first job in a clothes factory
  D. thought her friends’ job in supermarkets was more interesting
63. What would be the best title for the text?
  A. My Experience in a Clothes Factory    B. The Qualities of a Play Publisher
  C. Importance of Early Work Experience   D. The Secrets to Get the Right Grades

We found out that Jenny was hearing-impaired(有听觉缺陷的)when she was four and a half years old. Several operations and speech classes later, when she was seven, we found out that Jenny had Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis(风湿性关节炎). She could not put pressure on the heels of her feet, so she walked on tiptoe.
All through grade school, and on into high school, Jenny suffered, yet never complained. She took her medicine, and I would often wrap her feet in towels and hold her until the pain eased. But, as soon as she could bear the pain, Jenny immediately carried on, as though she were free of pain.
She was very popular and funny, attending every football game and cheering the team on, carrying her pillow everywhere she went, so that she could reduce the pain. Then came her senior year. She would be considered for scholarships; however, school activities, especially sports, could often mean the difference between receiving an award or losing out.
So Jenny came to a decision, and in her strange manner, she began to bombard the high school football coach with requests. She promised. She got her best friend to sign up with her. Finally, the coach gave in, with the warning, “If you miss ONE game, you are out!”
She carried big buckets of water to her teammates. She bandaged knees and ankles before every game. Often, Jenny could be seen carrying a bucket of water in each hand, nearly dragging them, along with her pillow pressed under her arms.
When asked why he thought that the team was winning all their games, even in the face of injury, one member of Jenny’s team explained, “Well, when you’ve been knocked down and you can’t seem to move, you look up and see Jenny Lewis, limping(跛行)across the field, dragging her buckets and carrying her pillow. It makes anything that the rest of us may suffer seem pretty insignificant.”

  C. Jenny had a strong will when facing her disease

The next generation may lose the opportunity to swim over coral reefs or eat certain species of fish, scientists have warned, as the world’s oceans move into a stage of widespread extinction(绝种)due to human impacts such as overfishing and climate change.
A report from a group of marine experts showed the condition of the world’s oceans was worsening more quickly than they had predicted. The scientists, who gathered at Oxford University, warned entire ecosystems, such as coral reefs, could be lost in a generation. Already the number of fish is dropping, leading to a risk of rising food prices and even starvation in some parts of the world.
The experts blamed the increased amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere for pushing up ocean temperatures, the increased algae(海藻)concentration in the water, which made the water have less oxygen, and the increasing acidity of the water. The conditions are similar to every previous mass extinction event in history. Dr. Alex Rogers, scientific director of the International Program on the State of the Ocean, said the next generation would suffer if species are allowed to go extinct. “As we considered the increasing effect of what humankind had done to the ocean, the situations were far worse than we had individually realized,” he said. “This is a very serious situation demanding quick and effective action at every level. We are looking at consequences for humankind that will have an impact on our lifetimes, our children’s lifetimes, and those of generations beyond that.”
The marine scientists called for a range of urgent measures to cut carbon release, including a reduction in overfishing, the shut-down of eco-unfriendly fisheries, the creation of protected areas in the seas and cuts to pollution.
     68. What could be the best title for the text?
       A. The World’s Oceans Will Be Empty of Life
       B. Carbon Dioxide Increases Ocean Temperatures
       C. Opportunities for the Next Generations
       D. Urgent Measures to Cut Carbon Release
     69. Which of the following would be unlikely to make the ocean conditions worse?
       A. Overfishing       B. Coral reefs        C. Climate change      D. Carbon release
70. According to the second and third paragraphs, we know that _______.
       A. the decreasing number of fish will lead to increasing food prices
  B. the condition of the oceans has been controlled more effectively than predicted
  C. the increased amount of algae fills the waters with more oxygen
  D. the present conditions of the oceans are different from extinction events in history
71. Which of the following measures is suggested by marine experts to cut carbon release?
  A. A reduction in fishing.      B. Increase of the water acidity.
  C. Creation of protected areas.     D. End of eco-friendly fisheries.

Nearly one in five young people in the UK have been suffering from cyber-bullying(网络伤害). Research suggests that girls are affected more than boys. Many victims said their experiences had damaged their confidence, mental health and even school attendance.
The study, by academics at Anglia Ruskin University, questioned almost 500 young people aged between 11 and 19. Almost a fifth admitted they had been subjected to cyber-bullying, in which a person uses the Internet or mobile phones to bully another. The 87 young people who had experienced it as victims were asked what impact this had had on them. A third said it had affected their confidence quite a lot or very much, while half said it had affected their mental and emotional happiness. Over a quarter of those who had been cyber-bullied stayed away from school, while more than a third had stopped communicating with others outside of school hours.
Of those 188 young people who answered questions whether they would seek help with cyber-bullying, only less than half said they would look for support. Those who said they would not seek help feared to make it worse. Those looking for support were most likely to seek help from parents and friends. Steven Walker, who led the research, said, “While most online interactions are neutral(中立的)or positive, the Internet provides a new means through which young people are bullied.” He added, “Many of the people in our study think that cyber-bullying by bullies seen as merely a form of harmless fun, a joke and therefore not an issue. Others think cyber-bullies are motivated through lack of confidence and desire for control, and perhaps because they are too weak to bully face-to-face.
As the use of social media among young people continues to grow, unless properly controlled by host sites and government agencies, the problem of cyber-bullying is only likely to get worse. Just last week Facebook’s marketing director, Randi Zuckerberg, called for an end to online anonymity(匿名), saying Internet users would behave a lot better if everyone had to use real names when surfing or posting on the Internet.
72. From Paragraph 2, a victim of cyber-bullying would probably _______.
   A. get little influenced     B. be afraid of being lonely
C. feel more energetic      D. stay away from school
 73. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?
   A. About a fifth of the victims of cyber-bullying are girls.
   B. Internet or mobile phones can be used to bully others.
   C. More than half of the 118 victims would turn to others for help.
D. Half of the 500 people questioned admitted they weren’t victims.
 74. According to Steven Walker, many young people think cyber-bullying is _______.
   A. a harmless joke      B. a sign of confidence
C. a serious problem      D. a positive interacion
75. We can learn from the last paragraph that _______.
   A. host sites with cyber-bullying should be closed down
   B. anonymity is a good way to protect online users
   C. proper solutions have been found to cyber-bullying
   D. measures need to be taken to control cyber-bullying

第四部分  写作(共两节,满分35分)
第一节 任务型读写(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在表格中的空白处填入恰当的单词。
注意:每个空格只填一个单词。
Competition is all around us and it makes the strong stronger and the weak weaker. It’s also responsible for teaching them how to survive in a fast-paced and stressful world. However, children can be hit by competition. How many of us have seen young boys weeping because their teams didn’t win inter-school tournament? How many of us have seen young teenagers cheat just to win? These are the effects of unhealthy competition. So it’s important to develop healthy competition among children.
When it comes to encouraging healthy competition among children, the first thing to do is set goals for them to stick to. However, you mustn’t push them too hard and burden them with a goal that is too high for them to achieve.
Since children may be easily affected by wrong ideas from popular media and the Internet, it’s up to you to develop the right kind of spirit in them. Team spirit will help them grow into human beings who aren’t easily annoyed by small losses or too excited by victories. In addition, they may also not want to adopt just any method to win, like cheating or lying. So give them examples where family members refused to cheat to win.
Sending your children the right signals is also important. When they take an exam, don’t ask about how much they expect to score; instead, ask what they wrote about. If your son played a cricket match at school, don’t ask him whether his team won or lost; ask him how many runs he scored and encourage him to score higher next time instead. When you let your children know that you’re more interested in how they performed rather than whether they lost or won, they will surely try to better themselves.

WYes.Let’s go! My friend went there last year, and she told me about a nice place to stay.

WLook at this photo. It was taken at Marvin and Joan’s wedding ceremony twenty years ago.
M:I know.It’s so embarrassing, isn’t it?I can’t believe I had such long hair.

WAs you know, Korean is my first language. I also speak English and Chinese. How about you? What languages do you speak?
M:English, German, and French. While I was studying in Europe, I used French and German all the time. Now my French is not so good, but I do deep my German up.

WDid you have your own room when you were little,Jack?
M:No.i think for the first 17 years of my life, I always had somebody else in the room with me.
WI always wanted my own room, you know, because there were five kids in our family and we had to share rooms. I had my own room for the first time when I was about 15.
M:When I had my own room for the first time in my life, I felt very proud and wrote in my diary,“I will treasure this new freedom!”
WWell, many of my friends had their own rooms even when they were young, even as babies.I was so jealous! But there were only three bedrooms in our house for seven people, so it was really crowded.

M:Halloween is coming. Are you planning to dress up this year?
WI wasn’t going to. Why do they have this holiday anyway?I don’t understand it. People just dress up in scary costumes and eat candy all night.
M:That’s not really all it’s about. Many people dress like their favorite cartoon character or a famous person. They go to Halloween parties and play games. Sometimes, they play funny tricks on each other.
WThat doesn’t sound so bad.Why was Halloween started in the first place?
M:It comes from an old holiday. When people honored their dead relatives. Many people in other countries still celebrate it that way.
WThat sounds better than dressing up like a dead person.
M:Then I can’t wait until you see my costume. You’re going to be so scared!
WPlease don’t say that! I hate those kinds of surprises. What are you going to dress up as?
M:A ghost!

WI can’t dicide which classes  to take. I don’t like any of the ones I’ve signed up for.And two of the ones I really have to take are at the same time!
M:Pass me the course schedule book.Which classes are at the same time?
WBiology 201 and Introduction to Chemistry. They’re both required classes.
M:Let’s find out if either of them is offered next semester.Look here. The chemistry class is.You can just take it in the spring.
WYes,that’s true. And the biology class is in a series,so I need to take 201 this semester. The only problem with taking chemistry next semester is that it meets every day at 800a.m.
M:What’s wrong with that?is that too early for you?
WNot too early. But I was trying not to take classes on Fridays. I want to work in the lab that whole day. I might be able to work for one of my professors.
M:Maybe you can start work after the class is over. It’s only an hour lecture. I’m sure the professor will understand.
WI hope so.
Text 10
When I was young, I lived in a place that had a lot of trees, many rivers, and was near a big lake. We had a large house with a garden and lots of grass. My brothers and sisters and I played outside whenever we could in our own yard, in our neighbors’ yards, and in the empty yards down the street. We rode bikes and played ballgames with friends. But I always thought that there was something missing in my environment, as wonderful as it was. I liked going to the big lake the most. Even there, though, I felt I needed something more. The lake was big, but you could still see land on the other side. One day, my family took a trip to New York City. As we drove on the freeway, I looked out the window at the ocean. For as far as I could see, there was no land on the other side. I rolled down the window and heard the sounds of the sea birds. They seemed to call me, telling me I would never be able to live away from the sea again.
