When Lloyd Toone was a young artist, his friend gave him a box filled with pieces of leather. He challenged Toone, saying, “I bet you can think of something to make from these.” Toone had been interested in the artwork he had seen when he traveled to West Africa. He decided to use the leather to make Africa-style masks. The masks sold quickly at an outdoor market.
Toone wanted to make more art from leather. So he asked the owner of a shoe repair shop to save the discarded (被丢弃的) leather shoes for him. Soon Toone began to create the sculptured portraits (肖像) that he has been making ever since.
Toone says he’s not always sure about what he will do with a piece of leather. “But my memory of the curve (曲线) of a certain piece of leather will give me an idea of how to start a sculpture. Once it’s started, the piece itself tells me what to do next, like whether to add an earring or a hat.”
Besides leather, Toone uses other materials to create his art. Sometimes he arranges different thicknesses of wood to create the contours (轮廓) of a sculpture’s face and clothing. “Use your mind and your energy to be creative with what you have,” Toone says.
Toone says he always pays more attention to discarded objects that he can make into art. “I take such pleasure in creating from discarded and recycled objects!” he says.
When he travels, Toone notices how people in other countries use discarded objects. “I saw some boys on the beach in Bali, in Indonesia, playing with a toy car. When they got closer, I saw that it was made from empty water bottles and sticks of bamboo.” “I admire the way creative and inventive people make to do with whatever their environment provides,” Toone says. How fortunate that his friend provided him with that first box of leather!

There were many great artists during the Renaissance. Perhaps the most famous are Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Other artists, however, also had great influence both during Renaissance times and later.
Giotto di Bondone (1267- 1337)
Giotto is the first painter to be considered a Renaissance artist. He was hired to paint a Fresco in a family chapel (教堂) in Padua, Italy, known as the Arena Chapel. Fresco is a painting made on a wall while the plaster (灰泥) is still wet. Many consider Giotto to be the father of the modern period of art.
Jan van Eyck (1390-1441)
Jan van Eyck’s early influences more than likely came from his brother Hubert. In fact, Jan would sometimes finish his brother’s works. The Ghent Altarpiece is an example of Jan finishing what Hubert started. Jan van Eyck perfected the techniques of oil painting. He is often known as “the father of Renaissance painting” because of all the new techniques and advances he made in oil painting.
Masaccio (1401-1428)
Masaccio was a famous painter of the Italian Renaissance. He lived a very short life and only a few of his paintings exist, but they were so different to the style of other artists around him that they helped other painters to see things in a new way. Masaccio is often called “the father of Renaissance painting”. He introduced the painting of the life-like figures that had not been done previously in the Middle Ages.
Raphael Sanzio (1483-1520)
Raphael’s paintings were known for their perfection. He was first taught art by his father. He also learned early techniques from Michelangelo and da Vinci. Rapheal’s influence on art has been great. He changed the way people looked at art, since he painted real life and emotions. He was one of the most detailed portraitists ever, and is considered as the genius (天才) of the High Renaissance.
25. Who is considered to be the father of the modern period of art?
A. Masaccio    B. Giotto di Bondone   C. Raphael Sanzio   D. Jan van Eyck
26. What was Masaccio’s contribution to the Renaissance art in the Middle Ages?
A. He perfected the technique of oil painting.
B. He was the first one to paint on a wet plaster wall.
C. He finished The Ghent Altarpiece started by Hubert.
D. He was the first one to paint lifelike figures.
27. What do we know about Raphael Sanzio from the text?
A. He died in his twenties.            B. He only had a few paintings.

For quite some time, scientists have been finding ways to power cars and other machines with natural fuel made from cooking oil and even water. Now researchers in Argentina say they have come up with a way to create fuel from another unlikely source—cow burps(嗝)
Cows have bacteria in their stomachs to help them digest their food. As they break down the food, those bacteria create methane, which the cows burp out when they belch (打嗝). Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas. It traps heat in the atmosphere and in turn can cause Earth’s temperature to gradually increase. Methane is at least 20 times more effective at trapping heat than carbon dioxide, another gas released into the air as pollution.
Researchers have tried to find ways to get cows to produce less of the gas. One method they’ve come up with is reducing the amount of corn and soy (大豆) in cows’ feed.
But scientists from Argentina’s National Institute for Agricultural Technology have taken a different approach. Instead of trying to reduce the amount of methane cows produce, they thought, why not turn it into fuel? After all, each cow releases 250
to 300 liters of pure methane a day. That’s enough to keep a refrigerator running for 24 hours.
To collect a cow’s burps, the scientists fix a plastic tank onto the animal’s back and connect it through a tube to the cow’s stomach. They then put the burps through a process that separates the methane from the other gases. “It’s the same as having natural gas,” says Guillermo Berra, head of the institute’s animal physiology group.
“As an energy source, it’s not very practical at the moment, but if you look ahead to 2050, when fossil fuel reserves are going to be in trouble, it is an alternative,” says Guillermo Berra.
Turning the methane into fuel can also help reduce the amount of greenhouse gases produced in Argentina, which has around 51 million cows. In 2006, the United Nations called livestock(牲畜) one of the most serious near-term threats to the global climate—more dangerous to Earth’s atmosphere than all the world’s cars and trucks combined.[来源:学优高考网]

   C. when cows are eating food
   D. when cows suffer from stomachache
29. By reducing the amount of corn and soy in cows’ feed, researchers want to _____.
   A. turn methane into fuel
   B. get more methane from cows
   C. keep cows strong and healthy
   D. reduce the methane cows produce
30. What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?
   A. How to turn a cow’s burps into fuel.
   B. How to collect a cow’s burps.
   C. The major use of methane.
   D. The similarity between methane and natural gas.

Have you ever received a gift that was so clearly not your taste that you wondered if perhaps it had been handed to you by mistake? Worse, have you ever given a present and watched your friend look as though she had opened the wrong box? Maybe she responded with a polite “Why, thank you,” but you knew you had missed the mark. Why do presents sometimes go wrong? And what do your choices (good and had) reflect about your personal qualities?
Choosing the right gift is an art, I believe. It calls for empathy-the ability to put yourself into someone else’s head and heart. We’re all able to do this; in fact, we’re born with a kind of natural empathy. After the earliest period of childhood, however, it needs to be reinforced(加强)by our parents, teachers, friends. When it isn’t, we’re not able to understand other people’s feelings as sharply. This can show in the gifts we select, and so can many other emotional(情感的)qualities.
Think back to the presents you’ve given over the past year, the time and effort you put into your selection, how much you spent, your thoughts while you were shopping, and your feelings when the receiver opened the package. Keep in mind that what you choose displays your inner world. Of course, you may express yourself differently with different friends, relatives, and other people you know.
We live in a society where exchanging presents is an important part of communication. Ignoring the tradition won’t make it go away. If you really dislike such a tradition, tell your friends ahead of time.
32. The underlined expression “you had missed the mark” means “you had failed
    to_____”
A. make her feel better     B. keep your friendship
C. receive a present in return     D. get the expected effect
33. Which of the following is the main ideas of the second paragraph?
    A. Natural empathy needs to be reinforced.
    B. Emotional changes influence one’s choice of gifts.
    C. Selecting the right gift is an ability people are born with.
    D. Choosing gifts requires one to understand the receivers.
34. In the third paragraph, the author tells us that _____.
A. the choice of gift reflects one’s emotional qualities
B. one learns from what he did in the past
C. attention should be paid to the receiver’s responses
D. one should spend more time choosing gifts
35. The best possible title for this passage is “ _____”.
A. Ways of Choosing Gifts
    B. An Important Tradition
    C. Exchanging Presents
    D.Message in a Gift
