For centuries, Paris has won the admiration of the world. The charm of Paris captivates all who visit there.
Where can you discover the charm of Paris for yourself? Is it in the famous castles, palaces, statues and monuments, such as the Eiffel tower? Can you find it in the world-class museums, such as the Louvre? Perhaps Paris’ charm lies in the style of the Parisians.
When you visit Paris, you don’t have to spend all of your time visiting museums and monuments. They are certainly worthy of your time, but ignore them for a day. First take some time to look around and experience life in Paris. You’ll find it charming.
Take a stroll along the Seine River. Browse through the art vendors, colorful paintings. Peek through delicate iron gates at the well-kept gardens. Watch closely the design of a doorway or arch and the little fountains and quaint balconies. No matter where you look, you will find everyday objects transformed into works by art.
Spend some time in a quiet park relaxing on an old bench. Lie on your back on the green grass. When you need refreshment, try coffee and pastries at a sidewalk cafe. Strike up a conversation with a Parisian. This isn’t always easy, though. With such a large international population living in Paris, true natives are hard to find these days.
As evening comes to Paris, don’t miss its highlight: eating out. Parisians are proud of their cuisine (菜肴). And rightly so; it’s world famous. You need a special guidebook to help you choose one of the hundreds of excellent restaurants. If you don’t know what to order, ask for the suggested menu. The chef likes to show his best dishes there. Remember, you haven’t tasted the true flavor (风味) of France until you’ve dined at a French restaurant in Paris.
31. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “captivate” in Paragraph 1?
A. astonish  B. attract   C. award   D. connect
32. According to the passage, why is it not always easy to start a talk with a Parisian?
A. Because true natives are busy enjoying their life.
B. Because Parisians spend much time in museums.
C. Because there are more immigrants than true natives.
D. Because Parisians share little in common with visitors.
33. What can help you order dishes at a French restaurant most often?
A. The suggested menu.    B. A special guidebook.
C. A Parisian.      D. The chef.
34. Which can help you appreciate the true charm of Paris according to the writer?
a. castles  b. museums  c. gardens  d. food  e. fountains
A. a, b, c   B. b, c, d,   C. a, d, e   D. c, d, e

Adam Braun established the organization Pencils of Promise in 2008. Its goal is to make sure all children have a chance for education. Six years later, the non-profit group builds a new school somewhere every 90 hours. It has helped more than 22,000 poor children in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
It all started when Adam Braun was a college student. He was visiting India when a boy stopped him in the street. The boy asked for money. Mr. Braun asked the boy what he would want most if he could have anything in the world. “I thought the answer was going to be ‘a house’ or ‘a car’. However, his answer was ‘a pencil’. So I gave him my pencil and he just lit up with joy. I realized he had never been to school before, and that was the reality for 57 million children around the world,” Braun said. After he graduated from college, Adam Braun started working in finance. But he never forgot the Indian boy and the problem he represented.
“We live in a world in which every single child should have access to quality education, because we have everything necessary. We have the capability of educating every child. So I became immensely committed to helping create that world,” Mr. Braun said. He raised money for his project by using social media. He paid for building the first Pencils of Promise school in Laos five years ago. Since then, his group has paid for more than 200 schools in rural areas of Laos, Nicaragua, Guatemala and Ghana.
He says that his organization works closely with the local education agencies. He says the local officials organize the main program of studies. The local people are willing to combine efforts and resources for children’s education. Now, people can see incredible results in the classroom. Such support helps Adam Braun decide to expand his organization’s work beyond the elementary school level. Pencils of Promise will make financial plans to help students continue with secondary school and teacher training.
35. What’s the aim of the organization Pencils of Promise?
A. To help children receive education.
B. To collect money for poor children.
C. To produce a lot of pencils for children.
D. To build many new schools for children.
36. What did the Indian boy really want to get?
A. A pencil.      B. Some money.
C. A house and a car.    D. Everything in the world.
37. What was the problem that the Indian boy had represented?
A. Child beggars should be educated well.
B. 57 million children wanted to have pencils.
C. There were many child beggars in the street.
D. A lot of children had no chance to go to school.
38. We can learn from the last paragraph that Pencils of Promise ______.
A. will offer the teaching program
B. lacks support from the local government
C. will help students receive further education
D. limits their support in elementary education

The term “résumé” means a document describing one’s educational qualifications and professional experience. However, guidelines (指南) for preparing a global résumé are constantly changing. The best advice is to find out what is appropriate (适当的) regarding the company culture, the country culture, and the culture of the person making the hiring decision. The following list is a good place to start.
 In many countries, it is standard procedure to attach a photo or have your photo printed on your résumé. Do not attach a photograph to your résumé if you are sending it to the United States, though.
 Educational requirements differ from country to country. In most cases of “cross-border” job hunting, just stating the title of your degree will not be enough. Provide the reader with details about your studies and any related experience.
 Pay attention to the résumé format (格式) you use — chronological (时间的) or reverse-chronological order. If you find no specific guidelines, the general preference is for the reverse-chronological format, which means listing your current or most recent experience first.
 The level of computer technology and accessibility to the Internet varies from country to country. Even if a company or individual lists an e-mail address, there is no guarantee that they will actually receive your email. Send a paper copy of your résumé, as well as the emailed copy, just to make sure that it is received.
 If you are writing your résumé in English, find out if the receiver uses British English or American English because there are variations between the two versions.
 Although English is widely accepted today as being the universal language of business, most multinational companies will expect you to speak the language of one of the countries in which they do business, in addition to English. Have your résumé prepared in both languages, and be ready for your interview to be conducted in both languages. Most companies will want to see and hear proof of your language skills.
 Be aware that paper sizes are different in different countries. The United States standard is 8½ by 11 inches, while the European A4 standard is 21 by 29.7 centimeters. When you send your résumé by email, reformat it to the receiver’s standard. Otherwise, when it is printed out, half of your material may be missing!
39. The passage is most probably intended for _____.
A. job hunters that seek careers abroad
B. companies that do international business
C. people that are employed by companies overseas
D. graduates that can speak over one foreign language
40. Which is always advisable when a global résumé is prepared?
A. Write it in American English.
B. Attach or print your photo on it.
C. Prepare it in at least two languages.
D. Send both a paper and an emailed copy.
41. From the passage, we learn that _____.
A. we can’t list the oldest experience first in a résumé
B. Asian countries have the same standard paper size
C. a résumé can help us know about a person’s personality
D. a person’s educational background should be included in a résumé
42. The passage mainly wants to tell us that a global résumé should _____.
A. be highly professional   B. be especially informative
C. be culturally appropriate   D. be completely chronological
D
Albert Einstein’s Theory of Relativity might have a few mistakes — and Jake Barnett has set out to prove it. Between attending college classes at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and tutoring his fellow students, Jake is also working on a new theory about the creation of the universe. He happens to be 12 years old.
From an early age, Jake showed an extraordinary interest in stars. When he was 3, his parents took him to a space observatory. He tried to learn as much as he could about astronomy. Jake’s IQ measured remarkably high at 170.
As a baby, Jake was found out with Asperser’s syndrome, a form of autism (孤独症). Autism causes difficulties in communication and social abilities. People with autism may also have strong interests — like Jake’s interest in the stars at a young age.
The symptoms of autism can range from mild to extremely severe. Asperser’s is one of the milder forms of autism. Sometimes people with Asperser’s, like Jake, develop extremely advanced skills in science, music or art.
When Jake was in elementary school, his parents worried that the effects of his Asperser’s were worsening. He became quiet. And he was withdrawing from people. So a doctor recommended that Jake’s parents let him study more advanced subjects, like math and physics.
Jake’s mother asked an astronomy professor to let Jake sit in on his class. Now, Jake studies advanced sciences like electromagnetic physics at IUPUI.
But Jake thinks it’s important to have a normal life too. He likes to play Guitar Hero with his friends and watch science fiction movies. He also enjoys playing classical music on the piano. But for Jake, studying physics is the most important thing. Jake’s professor, John Ross, is working on getting a large sum of money for him to do research at the university.
Doctors have said Jake’s autism symptoms have lessened over time. Still, Jake proudly refers to himself as an “Aspy”, or someone with Asperser’s. In an interview with his university student newspaper, he said, “I think the autism is the reason I’m even at IUPUI.”
43. What did Jake want to do at IUPUI?
A. Get a degree in astronomy.
B. Put forward his own theory in physics.
C. Become an Albert Einstein in the future.
D. Teach his fellow students Theory of Relativity.
44. Which of the following is the correct order of the events that happened to Jake?
a. He set out to disprove Einstein’s theory.
b. He was interested in astronomy.
c. He began to study math and physics.
d. He was found out with a mild form of autism.
A. b-d-c-a  B. d-b-c-a  C. b-a-c-d D. d-c-b-a
45. The underlined sentence in the passage means ______.
A. he was unable to help others
B. he was impolite to other people
C. he was afraid of seeing other people
D. he was only concerned about learning
46. In the eyes of Jake, autism is something ______.
A. embarrassing     B. upsetting
C. not worth worrying about   D. not necessary to know about
E
The Purpose of Boredom
Being bored can encourage people’s creativity — partly to escape the horrible, frustrated, and meaningless feeling of boredom — recent studies find. It could even be true at work.
Psychologists at the University of Central Lancashire had participants (参与者) copy numbers out of the telephone book for 15 minutes, while others went straight into a standard creativity task.
Both groups were asked to come up with as many different uses as they could for a plastic cup. The group that felt more bored came up with more uses.
Dr. Sandi Mann, one of the study’s authors said, “Boredom at work has always been seen as something to be removed, but perhaps we should be welcoming it in order to encourage our creativity. What we want to do next is to see what the practical implications of this finding are. Do people who are bored at work become more creative in other areas of their work — or do they go home and write novels?”
In a later study, Dr. Sandi Mann found that creativity was reduced when people were still bored but didn’t have the chance to daydream.
While we tend to think of boredom as something that certainly leads to trouble — drinking, gambling, and antisocial behavior, this research suggests different possibilities.
More than anything, the feeling of boredom is a strong signal that we are stuck in some kind of rut (惯例) and we need to seek out new goals. In the study above, this research led participants to new ideas.
Usually people will do anything to avoid being bored, as it’s such an aversive experience. But creative people, like writers, sometimes talk about seeking out boredom.
Here is the comedy writer Graham Linehan talking about boredom to The Guardian. “I have to use all these programs that cut off the Internet, force me to be bored, because being bored is an essential part of writing, and the Internet has made it very hard to be bored. The creative process requires a period of boredom, of being stuck. That’s actually a very uncomfortable period that a lot of people mistake for writer’s block, but it’s actually just part of a long process.”
So, when you start to feel bored, instead of glancing at your smart phone, try being bored for a bit. Who knows what creative thought might come of it?
47. From the study of Dr. Sandi Mann, we can learn that ______.
A. boring tasks make people creative
B. daydreaming may increase creativity
C. plastic cups can be used very creatively
D. copying numbers might be very interesting
48. The underlined word “aversive” in Paragraph 8 probably means ______.
A. common  B. unpleasant  C . unusual  D. personal
49. According to Graham Linehan, ______.
A. glancing at a smart phone is a solution
B. he is forced to feel bored by the Internet
C. the boredom period is a block for writers
D. being stuck for a period benefits him a lot
50. What is the author’s attitude towards boredom?
A. Critical.  B. Cautious.  C. Positive.  D. Unclear.

阅读下面短文并回答问题,然后将答案写到答题卡相应的位置上(请注意词数要求)。
As a boy growing up in India, I had longed to travel abroad. I used to listen to the stories my father would tell me about his stay in Canada and tours to Europe in the 1970s, with great interest.
My big moment finally came in the summer of 1998 when I was able to accompany my parents to Europe, where my father was to attend a meeting. We planned to travel to Belgium, Netherlands and West Germany.
I have vivid memories even today of going to Mumbai airport at night all excited about finally going abroad. I had heard several great things about Lufthansa till then but now I finally got to experience them first hand, during the flight to Frankfurt. We flew business class and even today I can remember the excellent service by the Lufthansa crew. The flight was really smooth and thoroughly enjoyable, even for someone like me, who is otherwise scared of flying.
After spending almost two weeks in Europe, we took the Lufthansa airport express from Dusseldorf to Frankfurt airport, for our return flight. What a journey that was! All along the Rhine, it was simply an unforgettable experience. I was in a sombre mood on the flight back to Mumbai as it marked the end of a wonderful vacation, but the Lufthansa crew members were able to change it into a most enjoyable experience yet again, with the quality of their service.
Being the first airline to take me overseas, Lufthansa will always hold a special place in my heart. Even today, I continue to enjoy flights on Lufthansa and simply cannot dream of choosing any other airline. Flying, in general, for me, has always been a terrible and painful experience. Flying on Lufthansa, however, is something I always have and always will look forward to.
