I was being interviewed by a senior manager for a big company. I told him honestly that the principal reason that I was interviewing with them was my need to keep my family in Boston. My wife had recently died of a heart attack. A job in Boston would help me reduce some pain for my 16-year-old daughter and me. It was important to me to keep her present high school.

Bruce, the interviewer, was politely kind, but he didn't search any further. He acknowledged(承认) my loss and, with great respect, moved on to another subject. After the next round of interviews, Bruce took me to lunch with another manager. Then he asked me to take a walk with him. He told me that he had lost his wife. And, like me, he had also been married 20 years and had 3 children. I realized that he had experienced the same pain as I had and it was almost impossible to explain to someone who had not lost a loved one. He offered his business card and home phone number and suggested that, should I need help or just want someone to talk to, I should feel free to give him a call. Whether I got the job or not, he wanted me to know that he was there if I ever needed help.

From that one act of kindness, when he had no idea if we could ever see each other again, he helped our family deal with one of life's greatest losses. He turned the normally cold business interview process into an act of earing and supporting for another person in a time of extreme need.

39. According to the passage, the interviewer, Bruce, was very       .

    A. generous         B. kind            C. happy         D. mean

40. The underlined word "principal" in the first paragraph probably means     .

    A. main            B. unimportant     C. necessary     D. possible

41. We can infer from this passage that       .

    A. the writer didn't get the job in the company

    B. Bruce made the writer pass the interview

    C. another manager also lost his wife

    D. the business interview was cold

42. Which of the following statement is NOT true?

    A. The writer's daughter was studying in Boston at that time.

    B. Both the writer and the interviewer experienced the same pain.

    C. Bruce was a senior manager of a big firm.

    D. Bruce wanted to make Mends with him because he gave him his business card and home phone number.

C

When you are advised to “get an education” if you want to raise your income, you are only told half the truth, what you should be told is to get just enough education to provide manpower for your society, but not too much education that would prove an embarrassment to your society. Get a high school diploma, at least. Without that, you are occupationally dead, unless your name happens to be George Bernard Shaw or Thomas Alva Edison and you can successfully drop out in grade school.

Get a college degree, if possible. With a BA, you are on the launching pad. But now you have to start to put on the brakes. If you go for a master’s degree, make sure it’s an MBA, and only from a first – rate university. Beyond this, the famous law of diminishing returns (报酬递减规律性) begins to take effect. Do you know, for instance, that heavy truck drivers earn more a year than full professors? Yes, the average 1977 salary for those truckers was $ 24,000, while the full professor managed to average just $ 23,930.

A Ph.D. is the highest degree you can get, but except for a few specialized fields such as physics or chemistry, where the degree can quickly be turned to industrial or commercial purposes, you are facing a dark future. There are more Ph. Ds unemployed or underemployed in this country than any other part of world by far.

If you become a doctor of Philosophy in English or History or Anthropology or Political Science or language or – worst of all – in Philosophy, you run the risk of becoming overeducated for our national demands.

Thousands of Ph. Ds are selling shoes, driving cars, waiting on tables and filling out fruitless applications month after month. And then maybe taking a job in some high school or lifeless college that pays much less than the doorkeeper earns.

Income and education are closely related. Far enough, that is, to make you useful to the gross  national product, but not so far that nobody can turn much of a profit on you.

43According to the writer, what the society expects of education is to turn out people who _______

Awill become loyal citizens to a nation

Bcan always take good care of themselves

Cwill not be a shame to society or their families

Dcan meet the demands as a source of manpower

44If you are as gifted as Bernard Shaw or Edison         .

Ayou can get a high school diploma without difficulty

Byou can be professionally successful without a diploma

Cthe least you should do is to get a diploma

Dyou will be successful in grade school

45Many Ph. Ds are out of work because        .

Athey are of little commercial value to the society

Bthey prefer easy jobs with more money

Cthere are fewer jobs in high schools

    Dthey are wrongly educated

46According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?

AThe higher your education level is, the more money you’ll earn.

BIf you are too well – educated, you may make things difficult for the society.

COne must think carefully before going for a master’s degree.

DBernard Shaw didn’t finish high school, nor did Edison.

D

It’s very interesting to note where the debate about diversity is taking place. It is taking place primarily in political circles. Here at the College Fund, we have a lot of contact with top corporate leaders; none of them is talking about getting rid of those instruments that produce diversity. In fact, they say that if their companies are to compete in the global village and in the global market place, diversity is an imperative. They also say that the need for talented, skilled Americans means we have to enlarge the pool of potential employees. And in looking at where birth rates are growing and at where the population is shifting, corporate America understands that expanding the pool means promoting policies that help provide skills to more minorities, more women and more immigrants. Corporate leaders know that if that doesn't occur in our society, they will not have the engineers, the scientists, the lawyers, or the business managers they will need.

Likewise, I don’t hear people in the academy saying. “Let’s go backward. Let’s go back to the good old days, when we had a meritocracy (精英) (which was never true? we never had a meritocracy, although we've come closer to it in the last 30 years). I recently visited a great little college in New York w here the campus has doubled its minority population in the last six years. Ital ked with an African American who has been a professor there for a long time, and she remembers that when she first joined the community, there were fewer than a handful of minorities on campus. Now, all of us feel the university is better because of the diversity. So where we hear this debate is primarily in political circles and in the media? not in corporate board rooms or on college campuses. ”

47Which of the following groups of people still disagree in their views on diversity?

    AMeritocracies. BPoliticians.   CProfessors.    DManagers.

48High corporate leaders seem to be in favor of promoting diversity so as to      .

    Alower the rate of unemployment

    Bwin equal political rights

Cbe competitive in the world market

Dsatisfy the demands of a growing population

49It can be inferred from the passage that        .

Ameritocracy can never be realized without diversity

BAmerican political circles will not accept diversity

Cit is unlikely that diversity will occur in the U.S. media

Din order to compete in the global market place, diversity is unnecessary.

50According to the passage diversity can be achieved in American society by      .

Aexpanding the pool of potential employees.

Bpromoting policies that provide skills to employees

Ctraining more engineers, scientists lawyers and business managers

Dproviding educating for all regardless of race or sex

E

Language is a major problem for the European Union (EU). The agreement or treaty(条约) which created the organization that eventually became the EU, the Treaty of Rome, stated that each country's language must be treated equally. The original(原来的) six countries had only three languages between them: French, German and Dutch/Flemish. However, there are now 15 countries in the EU, with a total of 12 languages. EU documents must be translated into all these languages, and at official meetings the speeches must be translated into all the languages by interpreters.

All this translating is very expensive and time-consuming (费时的). It is said that nearly half of all employees of the EU are engaged in translating documents and speeches, and nearly half of the EU's administrative(管理方面的) costs are spent on this task. In the near future it is probable that several more

countries, most of them having their own languages, will join the EU, thus making the situation even worse.

The problem is not just cost; there are practical difficulties as well. With 12 languages, there are 132 possible "translation situations" that might be needed. It is often difficult to find people in the right place at the right time who can translate from (for example) Danish into Greek, or Dutch into Portuguese, at a high professional standard.

In practice the problem has been made less severe by the use of English in many contacts between EU officials, since almost all of them speak some English. However, any move to reduce the number of official languages (perhaps to four or five) would be a blow to the pride of the smaller Countries. Another commonly suggested solution is to make English the official language for all EU business. However, this is strongly resisted by powerful member countries like France and Germany.

51. The organization that eventually became the EU       .

   A. was started by France and Germany      B. started with three countries

   C. was set up by the Treaty of Rome       D. included 132 languages

52. What's the main purpose of this passage?

   A. To give a solution to a problem.

   B. To find out a problem and show how severe it is.

   C. To criticize the European Union for inefficiency.

   D. To show that the problem cannot be solved.

53. According to the writer, the use of English in contacts among EU officials has       .

   A. angered the officials who don't speak English

   B. reduced the number of official languages

   C. reduced the effect of the problem

   D. been opposed by powerful member countries

54. The writer mentions "Danish into Greek" as an example of       .

   A. a situation that might be difficult to deal with

   B. a situation that occurs often

   C. one of the 12 situations that requires an interpreter

   D. languages easily being interpreted

55. The writer suggests that if the number of official languages was reduced  .

   A. the EU would not know which official languages to choose

   B. countries whose languages were not used officially would be unhappy

   C. only languages which are easy to translate would be used officially

   D. the smaller member countries would be pleased

Li Hua and Wand Hai are two students of Senior Three. Both of them work hard but they have different learning methods. Li Hua listens to her teachers attentively, trying to catch everything that the teachers say in class. Besides, she often discuss with her teachers as often as possible if she has some problems. Because of this, she spends less time doing her homework after class, so it is certain that she can go to bed earlier and she always keeps energetic in the day. However, Wang Hai has quite a different way of learning. He likes to stay up late at night doing his homework, so he often feels sleepy in class. As a result, he misses lots of key points and it is usually takes him more time to finish his homework, which makes it difficult for him to concentrate on what he is doing. In my opinion, Li Hua learns more effectively in class and has more free time to enjoy herself. So I prefer her learning method.
