  The Worst Part

Mom is usually home on Sunday but this week she was going to a big golf game and I was all alone in the house. I was mad at Mom for divorcing Dad.

I kept looking at the telephone until I couldn’t stand it any longer. I picked up the receiver and dialed Dad’s number over in Bakersfield. I even remembered to dial I first because it was long distance. “You promised to phone me this week but you didn’t,” I said, feeling I had to talk to him.

  I thought about that.

“Something on your mind?” he asked.

“I hoped you would call, so I waited and waited.” Then I was sorry I said it.

Have you seen Jurassic Park? In this film, scientists use DNA kept for tens of millions of years to clone dinosaurs. They find trouble, however, when they realize that the cloned creatures are smarter and more dangerous than expected. That’s nothing more than a fiction.

But could we really clone endangered animals?

To date, the most successful attempt to do so was the cloning of a gaur, a rare ox-like animal from southeast Asia. Scientists used a cow to bring the cloned baby gaur, named Noah. Two days after birth, however, Noah died from a common bacterial infection. Other endangered species that may be cloned include the African bongo antelope (邦戈羚羊), the Sumatran tiger, the cheetah (猎豹), and the giant panda.

Next, could we really clone extinct animals?

In theory? Yes. To do this, you need a well-kept source of DNA from the extinct animals such as wool mammoth (毛象), Tasmanian tiger, or even dinosaur, and a closely related species, still living, which could serve as a surrogate mother.

In reality? Probably not. On the one hand, it’s not likely that extinct animals’ DNA could survive undamaged for such a long time. Cloning extinct animals as wool mammoth, Tasmanian tiger, or dinosaur is much more difficult due to the lack of properly well-preserved DNA. On the other hand, for example, a gaur can have a cow as a surrogate mother, definitely not a monkey. But what about an extinct animals as unique as the panda? What species could possibly serve as a surrogate mother?

Cloning presents many exciting possibilities. However, even if extinct animals are brought back, they could not survive in today’s world. Not only do most extinct animals have no habitat to live in, but the other plants and animals they depended on for food may also be gone as well.

  64. It can be learned from the text that ________.

   A. scientists have cloned the African bongo antelope

   B. both the cheetah and the giant panda live in Asia

   C. the gaur lives in Asia and is endangered

   D. the gaur is an extinct species

  65. The underlined words “a surrogate mother” probably refer to a female who ______.

   A. contributes its eggs to another female B. gives birth to a baby for another female

   C. gives birth to a baby of its own D. cannot give birth to a baby

  66. The difficulty in cloning an extinct species is the lack of ______.

   A. both the well-preserved DNA and plants to live on

   B. both the habitat to live in and the well-preserved DNA

   C. both habitat to live in and plants to live on

   D. both the well-preserved DNA and a surrogate mother

  67. In the author’s opinion, it is possible that ______.

   A. some extinct species may be cloned, but not survive

   B. extinct species may be cloned and easily survive

   C. a gaur can have a monkey as a surrogate mother

   D. all the extinct species may be cloned

To Chinese immigrants, in the mid-1800s, California was “The Land of the Golden Mountain.” In their homeland they had heard the words, “There’s gold in California.” They sailed 7,000miles to join the gold rush and strike it rich. Between 1849 and 1882, more than 30,000 Chinese came to California. Most were men. They had been farmers in China. They came here to be miners and laborers. They ended up doing many other jobs, too.

Like many other immigrants, they did not plan to stay in America. They came because of their ties to their homeland and their families. They planned to return to China with their fortunes and help their families.

Only a few Chinese gold miners struck it rich. Most picked over the areas that had been mined already. But still, white miners resented the Chinese. Slowly, they drove the “yellow peril” from the mining camps.

By the end of the 1850s, many Chinese returned home. Those who stayed found other jobs.

Few women had come west in the gold rush. The Chinese saw a good business opportunity. They began doing the jobs women would have done. Many became house servants. Many more opened laundries.

The Chinese opened restaurants. Chop suey and show mein are popular Chinese-American dishes. The Chinese probably created these dishes to serve to the white miners.

Other Chinese became fishermen, farmers, and even cigar makers.

  68. Why did Chinese go to America in the mid-1800s?

   A. Because they could find good jobs there.

   B. Because they had found gold there.

   C. Because they could open laundries and restaurants there.

   D. Because they heard there was gold there.

  69. The underlined word “resented” mean “________”.

   A. liked B. helped C. hated D. served

  70. Which of the following was NOT mentioned in the passage?

   A. Some Chinese became drivers.

   B. Many Chinese opened shops to help wash clothes.

   C. Many Chinese picked gold around the old mines.

   D. Many Chinese returned to China by the end of the 1850s.

  71. Which should be the title of the passage?

   A. Early Chinese immigrants in America

   B. Dream to strike it rich

   C. The difference between men and women

   D. Gold miners in America

Kenya wants to organize a major international conference to discuss how to fight piracy(海盗) off the coast of Somalia. The conference may also deal with ways to rescue Somalia from seventeen years of civil war. More than forty percent of its people depend on food aid.

Kenyan Foreign Minister Moses Wetangula says the world cannot end piracy and civil war without dealing with Somalia’s political problems.

Somali pirates operate in the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden. The Gulf of Aden connects the Red Sea to the Mediterranean by way of the Suez Canal. The pirates have fast boats, modern weapons and equipment like satellite phones and global positioning systems.

Pirates hijacked the Sirius Star off the coast of Kenya and moved it to waters off Somalia.

The tanker Sirius Star, about three hundred thirty meters long, is the biggest ship ever known to have been captured by pirates. It also happened farther south than most attacks, and farther out at sea ---- more than eight hundred kilometers from land.

The ship was headed for the United States with two million karrels of oil, worth an estimated one hundred million dollars. A Saudi Arabian company owns the tanker. The pirates have reportedly demanded twenty-five million dollars in negotiations to release the ship and its crew of twenty-five.

Somali pirates generally do not steal goods or kill hostages. They are believed to be holding seventeen ships with about three hundred crew members. Among the ships is a Ukrainian vessel hijacked(劫持) in September with a load of military weapons including tanks.

The increase in piracy is raising the cost of insuring ships. Also, oil from the Middle East and exports from East Asia could take longer to arrive.

Some of the world’s heaviest shipping traffic passes the Somali coast. But major shipping companies have begun to consider new routes. One of the world’s biggest shippers, A.P, Moeller Maersk, says it will avoid the Gulf of Aden. A move away from the Suez Canal could hurt Egypt’s economy.

American and other foreign navy ships are now watching for pirates. This week the Indian Navy destroyed a heavily armed “mother ship” in the Gulf of Aden. But the area to protect covers more than one hundred sixty million square kilometers.

  72. According to the passage, which of the following is the key to solving the piracy in Somalia?

  A. Providing lots of money. B. Ending Civil war.

  C. Supplying enough food. D. Handling Somalia’s political problems.

  73. Somali pirates do the following things except that _______.

  A. they demand money B. they hold the ships with crew

  C. they kill some of the hostages D. they hijack ships with military weapons

  74. What can we infer from the passage?

  A. The cost of ship transport is decreasing.

  B. The routes of some ships might change.

  C. Nothing has been done to fight against the piracy.

  D. The Suez Canal is of no importance to Egypt’s economy.

  75. The passage is most probably taken from __________.

   A. a guidebook B. a science fiction C. a newspaper D. a horror film

There has been much disagreement over children's education in recent years. One of the questions is whether children benefit more from boarding in schools or from going to day schools and staying with their parents after school. It is becoming a matter of concern for more and more people, especially for parents with only one child.

The people who are in favor of children going to boarding schools point out that a boarding school is an ideal place for building up children's independence, which they seldom learn from their parents at home. Children who have the experience of going to boarding schools will come up with their own ways to solve problems they meet with instead of turning to their parents or others for help. What's more, these children usually enjoy team work than the little emperors' in many one-child families. They are generally more used to competing with others and will find it easier to fit modern society, which is full of competition when they grow up.

On the other hand, those who are against children going to boarding schools argue that these schools are usually much more expensive than ordinary day schools. Usually children from rich families gradually develop a sense of pride toward those from other families. And children at boarding schools have less time to be with their parents, which may lead to a gap between them and weaken family ties.

  第二节 书面表达(共1小题,满分25分)

In the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games Chinese athlete Liu Xiang dropped out of the race due to his foot injury, which led to a heated discussion among people across the country.

According to a survey conducted by a website, about 34% of the people think an athlete should quit the race when injured since health is much more important than a gold medal; While nearly 20% of the netizens believe that an injured athlete should hold on to the end instead of giving up halfway. They regard the sport field as a battlefield in which every athlete should fight for the honor of his or her country in spite of any difficulty.

In my opinion, it’s a right choice for Liu Xiang to choose to quit the race. For one thing, nothing is more important than health and sports doesn’t mean sacrificing one’s health for a gold medal; for another, after Liu Xiang recovers fully, he still has many chances to realize his dream.
