  Tuition and Fees

These pages provide information and advice to prospective graduate students about graduate fees including details about Fall/Winter and Spring/Summer fees, cost of living, payment instruction and information about your fee status and fee liability.

Fee examples provided on this website are sample fees only and are provided as a general guideline. Please make sure to consult with your department and/or email gradfees@ualberta.ca for clarification if you require assistance.

  Fall/Winter Fees

The following sample assessments are general guidelines for Canadian and International students registering in graduate programs during Fall /Winter terms.

Please note that these fee breakdowns are divided into two groups of current students: those who were admitted to their program of study prior to Fall 2011, and those who were admitted from Fall 2011 onwards.

  Admitted Prior to Fall 2011

  Fall 2016 /Winter 2017 Sample Assessments

  Admitted Prior to Fall 2011

The following sample assessments are general guidelines for international students registering in graduate programs during Fall 2014/Winter 2015 terms.

Fees change from year to year and assessments depend on the number of courses and the program in which students are registered.

  Note:

  (1) All international students are assessed an international student differential fee. For Fall 2015/Winter 2016, the international graduate student differential fee is $116.58 per unit of fee index.

  (2) International students who become Permanent Residents of Canada may be eligible for a reassessment of the differential fee. See the Change to Permanent Resident section for more information.

  Spring/Summer Fees

The following sample assessments are general guidelines for Canadian and International students registering in graduate programs during the Spring/Summer terms.

Please note that these fee breakdowns are divided into two groups of current students: those who were admitted to their program of study prior to Fall 2011, and those who were admitted from Fall 2011 onwards.

  Admitted Prior to Fall 2011

  International Student: Course or Thesis-Based

  Spring/Summer 2017 Sample Assessments

  Admitted Prior to Fall 2011

The following Spring/Summer fee breakdown applies to international course-based and international thesis-based graduate students who have been admitted into their programs prior to Fall 2011, only. Such students are assessed the following fees:

instructional fees at the Spring/Summer rate

differential fees at the Spring/Summer rate

non-instructional fees at the Spring/Summer rate

  Instructional Fees

Every course at the University of Alberta is assigned fee index units, represented by the (fi X) beside each course listed in Bear Tracks and theUniversity Calendar.

The instructional fees for Spring or Summer courses taken for credit are determined by multiplying the fee index units of each course by the Spring/Summer graduate fee index value approved annually by the Board of Governors.

For international students the fee index is $104.02, plus a differential fee index is also levied of $116.58 for a total of $220.60

Sample calculations:
Spring/Summer 2017 International Graduate Fee Index (fi) = $220.60
* = units of course weight

ENGL 680 *3 for credit course

fi 6

$220.60 x 6 = $1,323.60
EDPY 545 *6 for credit course

fi 12

$220.60 x 12 = $2,647.20

  Non-instructional Fees

All Spring/Summer graduate students, whether registered full-time or part-time, international, Canadian or permanent resident, are assessed the following non-instructional fees per term:

  Student Academic Support

  Athletics & Recreation

  PAW Centre

  Student Health and Welness

U-Pass: (either assessed for Spring/Summer term, but not both)

Please Note: Thesis based students admitted Fall 2011 onwards are NOT assessed non instructional fees UNLESS they register in a non-Thesis subject course.

  Notes:

Spring/Summer students are NOT assessed the Graduate Students' Association (GSA) Fee, the GSA Dedicated Fee, or the GSA Health and Dental Plan Fees. However, if the student paid the GSA health/dental fee in the previous fall term, coverage will extend until the end of August.

International students are assessed an International Student Differential Fee.

Fees for Fall and Winter Terms are different.

Cost recovery programs (MACT, MSc in Internetworking, MEd in Educational Studies, Executive MBA, Ft McMurray MBA, Fast Track MBA) assess fees differently. Contact the department for details.

MBA programs have a Program Differential Fee. Contact the MBA office for details.

Fees for audit courses are calculated differently.

  Admitted Fall 2011 onwards

  International Student: Course-Based and Thesis-Based

  Spring/Summer 2017 Sample Assessments

  Admitted Fall 2011 Onwards

The following Spring/Summer fee breakdown applies to international thesis-based graduate students who have been admitted into their programs Fall 2011 and onwards, only. Such students are assessed the following additional fees IF they enroll in an additional course in spring/summer terms that is NOT a THES subject course:

instructional fees at the Spring/Summer rate

differential fees at the Spring/Summer rate

non-instructional fees at the Spring/Summer rate

  Instructional Fees

Every course at the University of Alberta is assigned fee index units, represented by the (fi X) beside each course listed in Bear Tracks and theUniversity Calendar.

The instructional fees for Spring or Summer courses taken for credit are determined by multiplying the fee index units of each course by the Spring/Summer graduate fee index value approved annually by the Board of Governors.

For international students the fee index is currently $104.02, plus a differential fee index of $116.58 = $220.60

  Non-instructional Fees

All Spring/Summer graduate students, whether registered full-time or part-time, international, canadian or permanent resident, are assessed the following non-instructional fees per spring / summer terms:

  Student Academic Support

  Athletics & Recreation

  PAW Centre

  Student Health and Wellness

U-Pass: (either assessed for Spring/Summer term, but not both)

Please Note: Thesis based students admitted Fall 2011 onwards are NOT assessed non instructional fees UNLESS they register in a non-Thesis subject course. The only exception is the UPass fee which is assessed once, in Spring, and is valid for both terms. Students may Opt-In in order to have access to facilities not automatically covered through their fee assessment.

  Notes:

Spring/Summer students are NOT assessed the Graduate Students' Association (GSA) Fee, the GSA Dedicated Fee, or the GSA Health and Dental Plan Fees. However, if the student paid the GSA health/dental fee in the previous fall term, coverage will extend until the end of August 31.

International students are assessed an International Student Differential Fee.

Fees for Fall and Winter Terms are different.

Cost recovery programs (MACT, MSc in Internetworking, MEd in Educational Studies, Executive MBA, MBA Ft McMurray, MBA Fast Track) assess fees differently. Contact the department for details.

MBA programs have a Program Differential Fee. Contact the MBA office.

Fees for audit courses are calculated differently.
