DTU offers a new interdisciplinary study programme focusing on ensuring that the students acquire broad, general engineering skills. The programme provides the students with a solid grounding in mathematics, physics, and chemistry, and simultaneously teaches them to work across disciplines and apply them to solve actual problems.

An international programme
The General Engineering programme is taught in English and is therefore intended for students from both Denmark and the rest of the world—approx. half of the students and lecturers have an international background. This way, they become a part of an international study environment, which prepares them for a career in the global labour market.

Programme structure
In the first semester, students participate in a number of compulsory courses, where they are introduced to mathematics, physics, and chemistry. In the second and third semesters, the students are introduced to two of the programme’s four focus areas—Living Systems, Cyber Systems, Cyber Materials, and Future Energy—and in the following semesters, they will specialize in one of these areas. In the fifth semester, students have the opportunity to spend a semester at a university abroad, work on a project in collaboration with a company, or specialize further at DTU. In the sixth semester, the programme is concluded with a BSc project.

Think like an engineer
Throughout the entire programme, students work on design-build projects, which are practice-oriented, interdisciplinary group projects. The students work together on proposing an engineering solution to a specific problem from the real world. This way, the students learn to take the engineering approach to solving problems, and to communicate and work together as a group on finding the best solutions in real-life settings. In short: they learn to think and work like engineers.

Depending on their choice of specialization, General Engineering graduates can apply for admission to a wide range of MSc programmes at DTU or at another university. Combined with an MSc programme, the General Engineering programmes provide them with a unique profile which makes them attractive to high-tech companies, where their experience with project work and multidisciplinary problem-solving in an international environment gives them the sought-after generalist profile needed in relation to modern society’s technologies.

The General Engineering programme is a technical-scientific undergraduate study programme. At the beginning of the programme, you are required to take a number of mandatory courses such as mathematics, physics and chemistry and you will experience the engineering spirit through design/build projects. In the final part of the programme you will specialize in one of the subject areas ‘living systems’, ‘cyber systems’, ‘cyber materials’ or ‘future energy’. Depending on your choice of specialization, you can continue your studies on a wide range of MSc programmes at DTU or other universities or pursue a career internationally.

The programme’s first two semesters consist of mandatory courses. Emphasis is on the basic natural science courses mathematics, physics, and chemistry with a technical bias, and Design-Build projects. During the second and third semesters, you must also choose two of the four courses that introduce you to one of the study programme’s four areas of specialization. These will help you choose the direction for further specialization.
