It also prompts good reviews from many students, with one survey respondent praising the city’s lifestyle and inclusivity: “Amsterdam offers incredibly high living standards and is very open towards the LGBT community.” Another commented, “The city is very tolerant and full of art and culture, plus the nightlife is amazing.”

　　Well known for its high quality of life, the Danish capital has a very strong score in the Desirabilitycategory of the QS Best Student Cities index, which takes into account the overall quality of life to be had in each city, including indicators such as safety and pollution. And while all of the Nordic countries score well in these areas, Denmark goes one step further, also boasting the title of the world’s least corrupt country.

　　As well as being famed for their high quality of life, progressive politics and beautiful landscapes, the Nordic countries are also known for being relatively expensive places to live. This is reflected in Copenhagen’s low score in the Affordability category of the index, despite the relatively low tuition fees.

　　However, for those who manage their student budgets efficiently, the city certainly repays the investment of living costs, packing lots in to a fairly small space. This includes an impressive selection of museums, galleries and theaters, as well as parks, waterways and charming cobbled streets, with lots of cafés and independent shops to explore. If you’re interested in street fashion, Copenhagen is home to many fashion-conscious young people – particularly within the hip Nørrebro district – where monochromic layers, block-colored bikes and stripped-back sophistication are the standard.

　　It should hardly be a surprise to find Washington DC, the federal capital of the world’s most popular study destination, on a list of the planet’s best student cities. This year Washington DC is ranked as the 37th best student city in the world (joint with Copenhagen), up eight places from last year and fourth in the US.

　　Washington DC’s position as a leading student city is helped by the five universities based in and close to the city that feature in the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017. These are led by the University of Maryland, College Park at joint 131st in the world, followed by Georgetown University, George Washington University, American University and Howard University.

　　And of course, studying in Washington DC means being right at the heart of US history and politics – the White House, Supreme Court and national monuments and memorials are all located here. When not seeking study advice from statues of presidents past, you may enjoy spending time in the pretty and vibrant old port area of Georgetown, seeing an exhibition at one of the 19 museums in the Smithsonian group, or engaging in the traditional local pastime of debating politics over a good meal.

　　QS Best Student Cities ranking: Joint 39th

　　Located in the West Midlands area of England, Coventry is home to Coventry University (ranked among the world’s top 700), and the University of Warwick (ranked joint 51st in the world) – the latter being just to the south of the city on a 700-acre campus. Their combined student population is around 6.4% of the city total, with international students making up around 41% of enrolments, giving it a high score for the Student Mix category of the index (3rd out of 100 cities).

　　Coventry’s also gets a strong rating from graduate employers, thanks to the strong reputation of its universities as well as the city’s long history of leadership in manufacturing and design. This legacy is reflected in the fact that Coventry University is one of only a few institutions to offer a course dedicated to automotive design, while the University of Warwick has a center dedicated to supporting innovative collaborations between academia and industry (Warwick Manufacturing Group), which runs a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs.

　　Warwick University’s Arts Centre, which houses various performance spaces, galleries and a cinema, is one of the largest arts centers in the UK. Coventry has several other theaters and art galleries, and there are a number of large venues in and around the city which are used for both music concerts and major sports events.

　　Coventry’s active student life and friendly feel earn it a top-50 place in the new Student View category of the index. When asked to name the best thing about studying in Coventry, one respondent highlighted: “Ease of access in walking to places, friendliness of student community.”

　　The capital of the world’s largest country, Moscow is a city of superlatives – most populous city in Europe, home to the most billionaires, site of Europe’s tallest building... Student life in Moscow is certainly unlikely to be dull. The city offers a staggering selection of sights and experiences, from edgy modern art galleries and bohemian cafes, to the historic palaces and cathedrals within the Kremlin complex.

　　While it has a reputation for being an expensive place to live, Moscow may not come with quite as high a price-tag as you expect – and in fact, it appears in the top 50 of the Best Student Cities index for the Affordability category. High outlays on accommodation are offset by international tuition fees which fall in the mid-range (around US$4,700 per year), and relatively low daily retail costs. A Big Mac in Moscow, for instance, costs the equivalent of US$2.05, while the same order in Paris would deplete your funds by US$4.51.

　　Moscow also achieves a high score in the Employer Activity category, reflecting the fact that domestic and international employers hold its institutions’ graduates in high esteem. The city is home to an impressive seven universities included in the QS World University Rankings 2016-2017, includingRussia’s highest-ranking institution, Lomonosov Moscow State University.

　　The city also appears in the top 40 of the new Student View category, with plenty of positive comments from respondents to our student survey. One student commented: “Many activities and events happen during the year, the city is made for youth and student life”, while another said “You get to learn about different people and cultures.”
