　　New Zealand’s largest city places 28th in the QS Best Student Cities index this year, with a particularly strong score in the Student Mix category, thanks to its large and diverse student community, combined with an inclusive and tolerant culture.

　　Other high scores for Auckland come in the Desirability and Employer Activity categories, showing that it’s both an in-demand and comfortable place to live, and a favored recruiting ground for graduate employers. Its weak spot is in the Affordability indicator, due to comparatively high tuition fees and living costs. But don’t let the costs dissuade you – the city has plenty to offer in return, including two universities featured in the QS World University Rankings® 2016-2017.

　　Ranked 74th in this year’s QS Best Student Cities index, Christchurch is New Zealand’s second-highest entry (behind Auckland). The largest city on New Zealand’s South Island, Christchurch is known as ‘the Garden City’ – a testament to its beautiful, award-winning parks and gardens. Located on the east coast, close to the Southern Alps, it’s also traditionally known as the most English of New Zealand’s cities. There’s no shortage of things to do in Christchurch and the surrounding area, including skiing, bungee jumping, whitewater rafting, mountain biking, wind surfing, whale watching and more.

　　Though a number of earthquakes have hit the city in recent years, Christchurch has been experiencing rapid growth, with the Christchurch Central Recovery Plan aiming to ensure it is a safe, enjoyable and accessible city.

　　Wellington

　　On the south coast of North Island, Wellington is the capital city of New Zealand. It’s believed by some to be more aesthetically attractive than rival Auckland (we’ll let you make up your own mind), and offers a good selection of culture, cuisine and nightlife within a relatively compact area. And of course, stunning natural scenery is never far away in New Zealand – here, you’ll find beaches, forests, islands, hills and vineyards all within easy reach.

　　Universities in Wellington include Victoria University of Wellington and one of Massey University’s three campuses, as well as several institutes of technology and polytechnics. The University of Otago has a medical school here, and the New Zealand School of Music (run jointly by Victoria University of Wellington and Massey University) is also based in Wellington.
