To celebrate the University's research successes, the University of Hull is offering a full-time UK/EU PhD Scholarship or International Fees Bursary for candidates applying for the following project.
Studentships will start on 18th September 2017
A fully-funded multi-disciplinary PhD is available combining lab-on-a-chip technology, a major University of Hull strength, and wound research. The Advanced Wound Care cluster will, for the first time, bring together the required expertise to develop this technology in the area of wound healing. The student will design, and optimise a specialised microfluidic lab-on-a-chip platform incorporating human wound biopsy tissue. Pilot studies will be performed using porcine skin. This technology allows tissue to be maintained in a flow of media for several days which permits monitoring of tissue viability, induction of cytokines and other markers of healing. Once optimised the student will employ this technology to evaluate the response of wound biopsies to a series of antimicrobial formulations.
The successful candidate will be trained in a highly interdisciplinary manner, gaining experience of both microfluidic device design and fabrication alongside aspects of molecular and biochemical tissue characterisation. Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, a first class or 2.1 degree (BSc or Masters) in a relevant discipline within the Biological or Physical Sciences. A strong interest in multidisciplinary work is crucial.
Full-time UK/EU PhD Scholarships will include fees at the ‘home/EU' student rate and maintenance (£14,553 in 2017/18) for three years, depending on satisfactory progress.
Full-time International Fee PhD Studentships will include full fees at the International student rate for three years, dependent on satisfactory progress.
PhD students at the University of Hull follow modules for research and transferable skills development and gain a Masters level Certificate, or Diploma, in Research Training, in addition to their research degree.

To celebrate the University's research successes, the University of Hull is offering a full-time UK/EU PhD Scholarship or International Fees Bursary for candidates applying for the following project: The impact of a national renewable energy strategy on the Energy Estuary
Studentships will start on 18th September 2017

This PhD project will be an empirical study of the impact of national renewable energy strategies on the Humber region. It will be based on surveys of the general public and of local businesses, to determine how the two groups perceive the strategy and how they are adapting to it. A key aim will be to identify the features that distinguish firms and individuals who are adapting most successfully, and patterns in that adaptation. It will also be important to develop metrics defining what is meant by a “successful” strategy in this context, and where the impact mainly falls.
The project would be complementary to existing studies being carried out at the University, such as those related to Green Port Hull and the Siemens investment in Hull. Primary data collection will be required; the resulting data sets will be open to a variety of methods of analysis. The project may also make use of the video wall visualisation facilities.
Applicants should have a master’s degree in economics (or cognate subject), good econometric skills, a willingness to engage in survey data collection, and an interest in energy and the environment. An ability to work with others is important, as the scholarship is one of a number being awarded on the theme ‘Lowering the cost of the off-shore wind supply chain: From policy and strategy to execution’.
