Tuition fees, your student contribution, and the loan schemes available depend on a number of factors: the type of degree, the course itself, and your citizenship/residency status.

Once you have submitted your enrolment selections, you will be able to view your exact tuition fees for any given semester (or research period) in your Student Financial Statement. This statement will be generated and available in Sydney Student within 24 hours after you enrol.

Most University of Sydney coursework and research students are also liable for the Student Services and Amenities (SSA) fee, which was introduced by the Australian Government to fund services and support programs at universities. The SSA fee will be charged on 12 May for Semester 1 and 12 October for Semester 2 and you will be able to view it in your Student Financial Statement in Sydney Student after these dates.

  Annual review

Importantly, tuition fees and the SSA fee are subject to annual review, and will increase each year of your period of study, effective at the start of each calendar year.

  International students

The University calculates the tuition fees for single undergraduate and postgraduate degrees (coursework and research) based on an annual course fee that is subject to increase each year. This makes it easy for international students and parents/guardians to understand the potential financial commitment for each year of study.

Tuition fees vary between courses and the calendar year that you undertake study. Fees for each course are based on a full-time student enrolment load of 24 credit points per semester or 48 credit points per year (1.0 EFTSL). If your study load for the year is more or less than 1.0 EFTSL, your tuition fee will differ.

For example, if you are enrolled in a Bachelor of Commerce and taking the equivalent of 48 credit points each year (1 EFTSL) then you will pay $38,500 for the first year (2017), and this fee is likely to increase each year. Check the tuition fees for your specific course in Find a course.

  Combined degrees

For combined degrees, a single course tuition fee applies to the entire period of your studies (and is subject to annual review), regardless of the units of study that you select in each of the two qualifications (eg, a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws).

The tuition fee structure for the Bachelor of Veterinary Biology/Doctor of Veterinary Medicine combined degree is different – please see the important tuition fee information below.

Double degrees (undergraduate to postgraduate) – price differentiation

In a double degree, students usually commence in one degree and then transfer to a second degree to complete the remainder of their studies. The University charges students two separate tuition fee rates for double degrees that comprise an undergraduate degree and a postgraduate degree, with a higher tuition fee rate applying to the postgraduate degree. When you are calculating the likely total cost of your course please carefully factor in this price difference.

  Annual reviews

All tuition fees and the Student Services and Amenities fee are subject to annual reviews (and indexation, when required) and will increase for each year of your study, effective at the start of each calendar year.

Bachelor of Veterinary Biology and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine

This degree is calculated differently to other combined degrees. It has a combination of undergraduate – Bachelor of Veterinary Biology in years 1 and 2 – and postgraduate components – Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) – in years 3 to 6.

There are two separate tuition fee rates for this combined degree. You will be paying higher tuition fees in Years 3 to 6 – for study equivalent to the graduate-entry Doctor of Veterinary Medicine – than in Years 1 and 2 of the combined degree – the Bachelor of Veterinary Biology. Both tuition fees are subject to annual increases for each year of your study, effective at the start of each calendar year.

  Other fees and costs

When you are offered a place to study with us, you will be required to pay a deposit equal to your first semester of tuition fees, to secure your place formally and be eligible to apply for a visa. The total amount will be confirmed in your letter of offer.

You will be required to pay or give evidence of your Overseas Student Health Cover when you accept your offer.

Planning for everyday expenses and accommodation

Keep to a realistic budget by understanding the costs you're likely to face as a student in Sydney.

A useful budgeting tool is available to help you manage your income and expenditure.

For international students, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection have financial obligations you must comply with. As a single student you must be able to show you have the financial capacity to cover living costs of at least $19,830 Australian dollars per year. There are additional costs for extra family members.

Therefore, using this amount as a guide, a single student living away from home will require at least $1,652 per month for accommodation, food, utilities and entertainment. NOTE: Actual costs will depend on your lifestyle choices and needs.

  Keeping the costs down

Many of these expenses are unavoidable, but by shopping around, doing your research, and finding efficient ways to cut down on energy and hot-water usage, you can keep bills to a minimum.

If you experience financial difficulties while studying, we may be able to offer you an interest-free loan or bursary. Contact our Financial Support Service for advice.

  Weekly expenses

Whether you’re moving here from overseas, interstate, or you’ve grown up in Sydney, there are various weekly outgoings you'll need to budget for.

NOTE: Listed costs are indicative only and based on the information from the websites/sources listed. Prices in Sydney may differ and we strongly encourage you to do your own research.
