Beginnings of Baptist Education in America.Established in 1756, Hopewell Academy in New Jersey was the first educational institution sponsored by the Baptists in the American colonies. The secondary school educated a number of men。

Baptists Decide to Found a College in New England,In late 1762, a group of Baptist leaders met in Philadelphia, among them Morgan Edwards, who made a motion for the establishment of a Baptist college in New England. Rhode Island, one of the few colonies without a college, and a growing population with at least 22,000 Baptists, eighty percent of the total in New England. In July 1763, a young James Manning was sent to gauge the interest of Rhode Island’s leaders and found an overwhelmingly positive response.

During the six years that the College was closed, the campus was requisitioned as a barracks for American troops and later used as a military hospital for the French soldiers of General de Rochambeau. Many students left to join the war effort. But, finally, the war was over and it was time to resume studies.

In 1863, Brown became Rhode Island’s first land grant university when it received 120,000 acres in Kansas from the federal government under the Morrill Act. In exchange for the money generated by the sale of the land, Brown was to educate students in agricultural and mechanical arts. Dissatisfied with Brown’s broad interpretation of appropriate coursework, the legislature (having fended off Brown’s challenge all the way to the Supreme Court) transferred the land grant responsibilities to Rhode Island College for the Agricultural and Mechanic Arts (today’s University of Rhode Island) in 1894.

A president with, reportedly, “more force than tact,” Ezekiel Gilman Robinson, Class of 1838, was nevertheless an effective leader. Robinson oversaw a number of building restorations, as well as the construction of Robinson, Slater and Sayles Halls. He established professorships in scientific fields ranging from astronomy to zoology and instituted graduate study at the University, overseeing the awarding of the first A.M.s and Ph.D.s.

In the Fall of 1925, just a decade after passing 1,000 students, Brown began the year with more than 2,000 students for the first time. Of these, 604 were women and 1,465 were men.

Born in California of Japanese parents, John F. Aiso faced prejudice in his schooling due to widespread anti-Japanese sentiment, including being asked to resign as the district winner of a national oratorical contest on the Constitution. He initially enrolled in college locally, but after a visit to the Japanese Ambassador, who recommended him to President Faunce, he transferred to Brown. He graduated from Brown with honors, went on to Harvard Law School and during World War II was the highest-ranking Japanese-American in the U.S. Army. Aiso went on to serve as the Presiding Judge of the Appellate Department of the Superior Court of California.

Inspired by the American Indian artifacts he found on his Bristol property, Rudolf F. Haffenreffer II began to acquire items from further afield. After his death in 1954, his family donated his museum and 500-acre estate to Brown. In 2008, when the Museum’s collection had grown to over one million ethnographic and archaeological items from around the world, the University decided to move the collection closer to campus and to present public exhibits in a gallery in Manning Hall.

In April 1992, Gymnastics co-captain Amy Cohen, Class of 1992, and twelve other Brown female student-athletes brought suit against the University for violation of the 1972 Title IX legislation that stipulated that there be no gender-based discrimination in any federally funded educational activity. Their actions were spurred by a 1991 announcement that four varsity sports, including volleyball and gymnastics, would have their funding cut. When the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear its appeal in 1997, Brown settled, restoring funding to women’s gymnastics and volleyball and elevating women’s lightweight crew, water polo and equestrian teams to varsity status.

In an effort to integrate research and study of engineering and physical sciences with the life sciences and clinical practice, Brown founded the Center for Biomedical Engineering in 2002. Interdisciplinary research areas include neuroengineering, biosensors, mechanobiology, and regenerative medicine.

As Brown’s nineteenth president, Paxson has charted the course for the University’s future with the recently approved (October 2013) strategic plan, Building on Distinction: A New Plan for Brown. The Plan provides a vision and set of broad goals to achieve higher levels of distinction as a university that unites innovative education and outstanding research to benefit the community, the nation and the world. It calls for targeted investments to attract and support the most talented and diverse faculty, students and staff; capitalize on existing strengths; and provide the environment to foster rigorous inquiry and discovery across the disciplines. The Plan highlights the need to keep a Brown education affordable for talented students from all economic backgrounds and to sustain a community with the diversity of thought and experience required for excellence.

In July 2013, the new Brown School of Public Health officially opened. The transformation from the Public Health Program made the School of Public Health Brown’s third professional school, along with the Alpert Medical School and the School of Engineering. At the opening, founding Dean Dr. Terrie "Fox" Wetle cited Brown’s strengths: “understanding, preventing and treating misuse of alcohol and other substances; in encouraging healthy behaviors by addressing physical activity, diet and tobacco use; and in improving health care delivery by studying service use, identifying the most appropriate evidence-based interventions and examining the impact of changes in health policy.”

A 15-month celebration kicked off March 7-8, 2014 with a two-day open house for Rhode Island neighbors and school children, fireworks and a 600-pound birthday cake. Over 444 days, thousands of revelers arrived from around the world to celebrate Brown’s 250-year history and focus on what the future may hold.

Brown’s housing system is full of variety and services a vibrant, diverse community.First-year undergrads live with a roommate in close-knit “units” of 50 to 60 first-years.
