The Olympic Games

  Good morning, Ladies and Gentlemen. My name is XXX; I am from Jiangxi University of Science and Technology. I apply for the Qualification Certificate for Senior English Teaching. It is my great honor to be here to present my topic. Today I will talk about the Olympic Games. It is the reading part of unit 6 from Senior English for China Student’s Book 1A. Now I will introduce this period in detail.

  The analysis of teaching material:

  This is a reading passage. It plays a very important part in this unit.

  By study this passage, students can improve their reading ability and comprehensive ability.

  Teaching aims:

  1. Help the students to know something about the history the development of the

  Olympic Games based on the text.

  2. Let the students learn how to talk about the Olympics Games and how to make

  a brief summary about the history of the development of the Olympics Games using

  the information in the text

  Teaching important points and difficult points:

  Let the students learn how to talk about the Olympics Games and how to make a brief summary about the history of the development of the Olympics using the information in the text

  About the student:

  1. The Ss have known something about Olympics Games through the Internet and other ways.

  2. They don’t often use English to express themselves and communicate with others.

  3. Some Ss are not active in the class because they are afraid of making mistakes.

  Question-and-answer teaching method

  Studying Ways:

  1. Learn how to be successful reader.

  2. Learn how to gain information.

  3. Learn how to retell a passage.

  Teaching aids: a computer, a projector and a tape recorder

  Teaching procedures:

  Step1. Revision

  1.A dictation of the new words learned yesterday.

  2. Questions:

  (1)How often are the Olympic Games held?

  (2)When and where did the ancient Olympic Games begin?

  (3)When and where did the first modern Olympic Games happen?

  Method: Question-and-answer activity teaching method

  Purpose: To learn about the students’ knowledge about Olympic Games.

  Step2. Pre-reading

  Discuss some questions:

  (1) Is it important to win in a sports match? Why or why not?

  (2)Are the Olympic Games important to our society? Why?

  Method: Free discussion

  Purpose: Improve the students’ speaking ability and expression ability

  Step3.While-reading

  1. Fast reading: True or false questions

  2. Intensive reading: further understand the text; find more details of the text.

  (1) Choose the correct answers according to the text

  (2) Sum up every paragraph in one sentence

  Method: Question-and-answer activity teaching method

  Purpose: improve the students’ reading ability; understand the general idea of each paragraph.

  Step4:Post-reading

  Retell the text according to the topic sentences.

  Purpose: to make sure the students understand the whole text really and master the important point’s .The more important thing is to let them to have the ability of introducing and analyzing expressions.

  Step5. Summary and Homework

  1. Make a brief summary about the history of the development of the Olympics

  2. Do homework so that consolidate what they will have learnt in this lesson.

  Unit 8 The Olympic Games

  Topic sentences:

  Para1: The Olympics are held every four years

  Para2: Something about the old Olympic Games

  Para3: Something about the Olympics in modern times and the 27th Olympic Games.

  Para4: The Olympic motto and something about the track stars: Carl Lewis and the Chinese

  team in Sydney Olympics.

  Para5: Beijing will host and is making preparation for the 29th Olympic Games.

  Discuss some questions:

  (1) Is it important to win in a sports match? Why or why not?

  (2) Are the Olympic Games important to our society? Why?

  Comments: Check the students through arranging some practice, and let them discuss the feeling of learning this lesson, in this way, the student can know what they have mastered
