一、推荐信中的优点写作
对申请人的优点介绍及评价，这是推荐信的核心。主要包括申请人的天赋，学习成绩，研究能力，工作经验，学习精神，组织能力，品行及个性方面。推荐人写申请人的优点时应注意事项：
1、客观评价申请人的成就，避免赞美过度
推荐人应该表明推荐人对于申请人的目的、学习成绩、科研能力等方面有一定了解，并能解释申请人进一步深造的需要。很多推荐信把申请人吹成了一个甚至比教授还牛的专家，就失去了推荐信的意义，既然已经是大师级人物了，还用去留学吗？
2、插入申请人的一些具体实例，避免泛泛的赞美之词
推荐信中对于申请人的重要素质和能力要有实例的支持。作为推荐教授，总是可以讲述申请人在做一些科研项目时的责任和表现。作为申请人的老板，总是能说出申请人某一项具体成就。就像写自述信时一样，拿出一张纸，一边写出自己的品质，优点，在另一边注明至少一个实例。切记：推荐不是吹捧，所以推荐信的“装扮”要适度，不能太花哨，太渲染。要尽量用平实可信的语言，增加细节性的例证说明。
3、转换语言风格和思维角度，增加推荐可信度
自己给自己写推荐信不仅仅是摆事实的问题，还有一个口吻，行文问题。首先是内容上，除了补充自己自述中所没有的方面外，对于一些重要的成就和优点进行论述时，要从推荐人的角度考虑，切勿简单重复自述信或简历中的内容；其次是语言风格上，用词上要注意变换，不要出现你自述信中常用的习语等，最后在推荐信用的纸张、信封、字体、字号、段落等方面尽量避免雷同。
二、推荐信中的缺点写作
1、推荐信里申请人的缺点不能是原则性的
推荐信的缺点不能是原则性的，原则性缺点包括很多，比如为人处世、马虎大意等等，这些让人家一看就没有好感的缺点千万不要写。同时，在围绕专业的这部分内容方面，也要注意分寸。例如，说申请人很努力，但是专业方面仍然有不足，学习能力仍然有待加强，这样可以，这是谦虚的表现，同时也侧面写出了申请人的优点。但是，如果说申请人遇到挫折就没有耐心，麻痹大意，甚至无法和申请人一起在专业方面合作等等，这种缺点千万不能要写。
2、适当提及自己的“缺点”
一封推荐信如果阐述的完全是被推荐的同学的优点，不免让人觉得有粉饰之嫌，如果能恰当地加入一些“缺点”，不仅能令推荐信真实，还会通过“似贬实褒”，反而突出了被推荐人的特殊气质。例如在推荐信中可以考虑加入这样的词句：“该生有时因为过分专注于研究工作而难以平衡生活各方面的关系，这不失为一种美中不足”。这句话似乎是在谈“缺点”，但很明显这样的“缺点”其实正是很多专业最渴望的“缺点”——废寝忘食的工作态度，从而使得“缺点”也为申请提供了巨大帮助。
3、推荐信里的缺点针对自己的专业也要有分寸
可以考虑针对你的专业， 不注重的地方， 写一些缺点。比如你以后是要做研究的， 你就不能说自己没耐心， 不注意细节，或者以后你是要跟人打交道多的， 你就不能说自己不善于和人相处， 交流等等。推荐信里的缺点不要影响你所学专业，但是要看起来要真实一点， 而且不能跟你其他部分写的有矛盾。在推荐信中不要用尽所有表现人类美德、才华和优秀的形容词，却没有一个具体例证。在推荐信中适当提及缺点是非常有必要的，但是这个缺点最好不要针对自己所学的专业。
所谓“金无赤足人无完人”，即便是要申请出国留学，也不可能把自己说的是十全十美，那么在推荐信中，如何权衡这一点呢？因为推荐信最重要的一个标准就是真实性，最好的办法就是客观公正，对于优点要大力褒扬，而对于缺点，也不要太过掩饰，否则会让校方觉得不真实。

Dear Sir/ Madam，
I am writing this letter of recommendation for Mr.Cai， my former student. I have known Mr. Cai for more than 6 years since his freshman year at ＂University of Minnesota＂. At that time， he took the course-- ＂Mathematical Analysis，＂ which I taught mainly for junior students majoring in Mathematics. To my surprise， I found he was among the few students in his class who could keep up with the pace of my lectures. Moreover， he often posed thought-provoking questions during the course. Thus it was natural that I liked discussing with this young man and became familiar with him. The more I knew him， the more I found he was talented at mathematics. As you can see， he got excellent scoreson the course. In fact， he ranked No. 1 on this 270 hours course in the talented student class， which has 34 intelligent others.
With his outstanding talent and solid mathematical background， he also did quite well in most other courses during his undergraduate study. By the way， you may wonder why his undergraduate scores look not so good compared to other Chinese applicants. As to his personality， I would like to say Mr. Cai is a warm-hearted， honest and upright student. He was always ready to help others. During my lectures， many students got confused at some points and I could always see Mr. Cai help them explain duringbreaks. In the meanwhile， I must admit that Mr. Cai was a bit impatient sometimes.
