　　一、International degree students (bachelor, diploma, state examinations)

　　In order to study at a German university, a prospective student must provide a Hochschulzugangsberechtigung (university admission qualification). German applicants acquire an Abitur (General Qualification for University Entrance certificate), which allows them to apply for a spot at a university. International applicants must determine if their secondary school graduation is equivalent to the German Abitur prior to applying to a university.

　　Students who meet the application requirements may otherwise improve their chance of admission depending on which study programme they apply for or by passing the Test for Academic Studies (TestAS).

　　Please use the Anabin Database [website is in German] or the website of theDAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) to check if your secondary school certificate is equivalent to the German Abitur.

　　(1)If your secondary school certificate is not equivalent:

　　You need to attend the Studienkolleg (Saxony Preparatory Courses) before taking up studies at a university.

　　Prospective students without an equivalent certificate must first pass a comprehensive assessment exam at a Studienkolleg (Preparatory Courses) prior to being accepted to a university. The exam is designed to test if you are adequately prepared to study at a university or institution of higher education in Germany. A two-semester long preparatory course for the exam is offered by the Studienkolleg Sachsen, an institution run by Leipzig University.

　　(2)If you have already completed some studies at university in your home country, or if you already possess a university degree:

　　You can apply directly to a university.

　　Students who have already passed university courses in their home country can apply directly for the same (or a similar) course of studies at a German university. Please use the Anabin Database or the website of the DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) to see if your partially completed university studies are sufficient for university admission in Germany. Prospective students who already possess a university degree may apply for any study programme at any German university.

　　(3)If you have a secondary school certificate from a country in the EU (including Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway):

　　You can apply directly to a university.

　　You have a secondary certificate equivalent to the German Abitur.

　　(4)If you are a national of an EU-country (including Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) AND you are applying for a study programme with a limited number of slots (Numerus Clausus, or NCZ):

　　You can apply directly to a university.

　　If you are applying for a study programme with a central admission restriction such as Medicine, Pharmacy, or Veterinary Medicine, then you will be competing with German applicants for a slot.

　　(5)If you are applying for the International Physics Studies Programme as an undergraduate:

　　The full application must be submitted to uni-assist.

　　Differing deadlines may apply if you have to direct your application to Stiftung für Hochschulzulassung.

　　For some study programmes, applicants have to pass an aptitude test. Please note that you have to register in time for this test in additon to applying for the study programme. Exact dates for the aptitude test and registration deadlines are given on the respective study programme's website.

　　Prerequisites

　　1. Completed university studies

　　One prerequisite for admission to a master study programme is that the applicant has successfully completed a bachelor degree or other first higher education degree.

　　2. Language requirements

　　If you wish to apply for a master study programme which is taught in German, your knowledge of German must be the equivalent of the level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). To start the application process, it is sufficient if you provide a certificate proving that your knowledge of German is at the level B2. It is however absolutely essential that you provide a certified copy of your German certificate proving your ability at C1 level by no later than when you enrol.

　　If you wish to apply for a master study programme taught in English, then you must submit corresponding documentation to prove your knowledge of English. The study programme regulations of your chosen subject specify which documents are accepted as proof. Please note that, depending on your study programme, you may also be required to provide evidence of further foreign language skills. 　　Note: Applicants who have already successfully completed their first higher education degree, and whose knowledge of German is at B1 level, may, for a fee, take a German language course at the Studienkolleg Sachsen which is designed to prepare them for studying here (“DSH course”).

　　Most master study programmes also involve an aptitude test (“EFP”) as well as the University examining whether applicants fulfil the subject-specific admission requirements (“FZV”). This examination may involve verifying documents, requesting work samples or personal interviews at the respective institutes. To find out whether the master study programme you have chosen is subject to such an aptitude test or evaluation of subject-specific requirements, please refer to the Study Office ("Studienbüro") website of your institute.
