When the blades met, there was no ring of metal on metal; only a high, thin sound at the edge of hearing, like an animal screaming in pain.这里的主句是there was no ring … 和(there was )only .. 这两个句子组成并列句，主谓一致，所以省略后面的there was。like接插入语，对a high, thin sound 进行补充说明。而when 引导的是时间状语。
checked,这里check非常形象，本意是find out，这里表示再次确认。形象地描写了这个刺耳的声音再次响起。
blow，作动词时是吹风的含义，而作名词则表示坏的效果，bad effect, that an action or event causes difficulty or sadness for someone。描绘出了Waymar勉强招架的画面。
flurry,是描写一阵慌乱，a time when there is suddenly a lot of activity and people are very busy。如果有一天突然有点忙乱时，你就可以这样说，The day started with a flurry of activity.
flurry还可以作量词，形容一阵风雪，或一阵风雨。
